Kadokawa has announced a new Higurashi When They Cry anime in celebration of the anime’s 20th anniversary.
While details are scant, the new Higurashi When They Cry anime is being produced by Studio Deen and is based on the original work by Ryukishi07 / 07th Expansion.
The original game released back in 2002 but got two anime series known as When They Cry in 2006 and 2007, also by Studio Deen and directed by Chiaki Kon. A third anime OVA was released in 2009.
Higurashi When They Cry is a Japanese murder mystery soft visual novel that focuses greatly on character development, most especially its focus on sound and atmosphere, with the story conveyed with narration and dialogue spoken by voice actors.
The initial teaser trailer, teaser visual, and cast were announced, with all the original actors reprising their roles:
