A man already under arrest for allegedly targeting property connected to a Pakistani resident in Hokkaido has now been rearrested over a separate fire that destroyed a mosque, leading authorities to investigate what appears to be a series of attacks occurring within days of each other.
Police in Hokkaido have rearrested 37-year-old Ryotaro Ishii in connection with a February fire that completely destroyed a mosque building in Ebetsu.
According to investigators, Ishii is suspected of setting fire to a prefabricated structure in Kakuyama, Ebetsu, that was being used as an Islamic place of worship, and the blaze destroyed the building.
When questioned by police following his rearrest, Ishii reportedly declined to discuss the allegations, stating, “I don’t want to say anything today.”
The latest arrest comes after Ishii was already taken into custody in May on suspicion of attempting to set fire to a building serving as both a company office and residence operated by a Pakistani national.
Authorities say that building was located approximately 400 meters from the mosque and was allegedly targeted just five days before the mosque fire occurred.
While police have not publicly disclosed a motive, the close proximity of the two locations and the fact that both incidents allegedly involved property connected to members of the local Pakistani and Muslim communities have drawn attention to the apparent pattern.
The mosque fire resulted in the complete destruction of the building, which had been used as a place of worship for local Muslims. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Police are continuing to investigate both cases and have not announced whether additional charges may follow.
