koreader gone after update?
i was trying to connect my kobo to my mac using a USB adapter but i couldn't get it to work (i probably should've gotten a usb-c to usb-c cable instead but that's a diff story) so i thought id try exiting koreader and check for updates. after updating & rebooting, i noticed koreader is gone and this pops up when clicking on NickelMenu.
what happened pls help 😭

You always need to reinstall kfmon after a kobo system update. Use the alternative NickelMenu installation process if you don't want to reinstall kfmon after each update.
RIPPP thank you!
The new update is at a kernel level and changes dramatically the way you update the software. As a result, KFMon is no longer compatible
This happens after every firmware update if you install KOReader together with KFMon.
I'd recommend reinstalling it via the Alternative Manual Installation Method based on NickelMenu (I have no idea why this isn't the recommend method for Kobo; it causes way less headaches).
Drives me crazy that it's not listed first anywhere newbies are searching. It's very easy and least problematic down the line too. I guess I'm lucky that when I first looked into KOReader, I read through all the options on the installation section on GitHub and it became very obvious which would be the best method.
thank you so much for this! i'll give it a try 🥲
You erased your existing install of Koreader and Nickelmenu when you updated the system software. You will need to reinstall.I have been corrected. See other accurate posts.
They just need to reinstall kfmon. All their KOReader data is still there on the device.
Or they need to switch to launching with nickelmenu. No reason to use kfmon at all. It just creates unnecessary hassle.
use the web installation, it is fast and easy. https://www.reddit.com/r/koreader/s/qMgK2ci5Cz
For the Kobo to Mac connection, I found it connects more consistently (either through the adapter or USB‑C to USB‑C) if the USB is already plugged into the device first, then I plug the other end into the computer to actually trigger the connection. It's really finicky but so far this has worked for me.
The update breaks your Kobo, making it even unavailable for your PC and no more than a funny looking paperweight. You better ditch it and go on with your life
