This is translated using claude.
It exists. Though at this point… I suspect it's probably been forgotten by most people.
In my view, the Total Eclipse anime is set in a different probability universe from the game — one with a nearby divergence point. As luck would have it, an anime adaptation was greenlit while the novel serialization was still running, and a console game was also decided in order to tie in with it. Compared to Muv-Luv Alternative — which got the go-ahead for an anime adaptation on a single sheet of concept notes, only to be shelved for seven years before it finally happened — Total Eclipse was a very lucky work.
One of the major reasons Muv-Luv didn't get an anime adaptation sooner was the problem of the story being too vast and too dense. If you lead with an AVG with unlimited text capacity, the sheer volume of scenario content makes anime production untenable. So the idea I hit upon was to make use of the probability universe concept. By setting it in a nearby divergent worldline, I devised a structure that would allow the AVG and the anime to coexist, each tailored to the strengths of its respective medium.
This was heavily influenced by my childhood experience with works like Kikaider and Getter Robo, which ran simultaneously as TV series, manga, and serializations across multiple children's magazines (from Tanoshii Yochien all the way up to Shogaku Rokunensei) — all with completely different content. (Japanese manga was already doing multiverse storytelling in the '70s!) And I enjoyed all of them without any sense of contradiction.
The result was that in my head, the AVG became Yuuya's coming-of-age story centered on Cryska, while the anime became a separate vision of Total Eclipse's possibilities, centered on Yui's growth. (This is why 'Teito Moyu' was written as an anime-exclusive addition — it was there to make the anime Yui's story.)
A great deal happened, so I'll spare you the full account — but the anime, originally planned for two seasons, ended after one, and Yui's story ultimately remained something that existed only in my head.
After that, the PC version of Total Eclipse was released, with the addition of a short-form AVG of 'Teito Moyu.' Perhaps partly because of that, Yui's popularity never waned — and the fan cries of 'Add a Yui route!' (which made me twitch every time I saw them, lol) only grew louder.
At the time, however, I had stepped away from Muv-Luv and was in a position focused on developing new projects, so there was nothing I could do publicly. What I came up with was: 'Maybe a doujinshi in the grey zone could work?!'
I immediately set about externalizing and visualizing the story in my head, and assembled a plot structured as a two-volume light novel set. That process led to the release at Comiket 2017 of The Third Great Samurai-Girl Tsundere War — a work occupying the position of an introductory pamphlet for that story.
The reason it ended up with such an absurd title is that even for a doujinshi, with the original author directly involved, using Total Eclipse or Muv-Luv in the title would have been asking for trouble.
Even so, after release it created a noticeably heavy atmosphere at the regular executive meeting — 'Hey, is that really okay?' — and was ultimately resolved by placing it under the publisher's custody.
(My separately-hatched plan to recoup the out-of-pocket design document costs for the comic adaptation's final chapter — which I had self-proposed to Dengeki Daioh and seen through to completion — via doujinshi sales also generated an even heavier atmosphere at that same meeting, so it was handed over to the publisher at the same time, eventually seeing publication as 'exogularity 01,' bundled with a Strike Frontier PR feature.)
The Third Great Samurai-Girl Tsundere War (hereafter: the Yui arc) picks up a few weeks after the anime's final episode. Here's a rough rundown of the early story:
The XFJ Project is frozen following denunciation by Lieutenant Colonel Ōtomo; Yui is relieved of her post.
Yui is detained on suspicion of being a spy who leaked classified information, but released due to insufficient evidence.
The Imperial Household's military command takes issue with Yui's failures, and long-simmering resentment toward the conservative Takamura noble house boils over.
At a convened imperial inquiry, by order of Koubu'in Yuuhi, Yui is placed under indefinite suspension of family headship.
She is ordered to serve at the Takamura residence in the new imperial capital until the retrieval of equipment from Yukon is complete.
Former subordinates and reform-minded noble warriors, driven by righteous indignation, begin gathering at the Takamura residence night after night — much to Yui's bewilderment.
An exhausted Yui is sent by Iwaya as his proxy to North America's largest weapons exhibition.
On returning to her Las Vegas hotel after the first day of the exhibition, she reunites with Chadwick.
An unexpected proposal throws Yui off balance. As Chadwick leaves, he lets slip Yuuya's whereabouts.
Mentally at her lowest, Yui finds herself visiting Yuuya at Nellis Air Force Base.
Yuuya has been demoted and assigned as a company commander in an overseas deployment unit, leading a ragtag band of immigrant TSF pilots.
Yuuya heaps praise on Yui, saying he only now understands how hard things were for her — and Yui finds herself falling for it.
Hearing the full story of the XFJ Project's dissolution, Yui becomes consumed by the delusion that she was a disposable pawn in a secret Japan-US agreement.
Overwhelmed by a sense of emptiness, as if everything she had believed in and stood upon had crumbled, Yui breaks down in tears.
Yuuya, asking nothing, pulls her into a hug. That night, Yui crosses a line of her own volition.
Several weeks later, Yui is demoted to the Next-Generation Technology Integration Research Unit at Chitose Base.
There she finds four platoons of Type-2 Phase 2 units. Yui's spirits soar.
Ten days later, parts retrieved from Yukon arrive, and four units are upgraded to Phase 3.
That covers the early-to-mid section of the story — but even though this is all technically public information, I'll hold back from going further than this.
Going forward, if there's enough demand to know more in depth (pending confirmation with the publisher), I'm considering making it available in a paid-access limited release. In practice, there are quite a few things I can't comfortably post or write about unless there's a paywall in place to filter things (sweat). If I'm going to write the deeper stuff, a paywall also makes sense as a way to filter out people with different literacy levels and values — those who might casually copy-paste and spread things around without any ill intent.
