History of the Temple of Inner Light

The Temple of Inner Light was formed in 1980 by Alan Birnbaum as an offset to the the Native American Church. The Temple has gained some notoriety for its adoption as the primary sacrament for the "Temple of the True Inner Light" in the United States, a Christian off-shoot organization who believe in the ritual use of psychedelics and refer to the 'true flesh of god'

The Belief System

The Temple of the True Inner Light is a religious organization based in Manhattan, which believes that psychoactive substances such as dipropyltryptamine, cannabis, LSD, mescaline, psilocybin, psychedelic mushrooms, and others are the true flesh of God. The organization also believes that all religions are based upon the psychedelic experience.

The Temple uses Di-Propyl Tryptamine (DPT) as its sacrament, which Temple followers regard as the actual manifestation of God, rather than a means to access God1. The Temple believes that Entheogens such as Dipropyltryptamine, THC, LSD-25, Mescaline, Psilocybin and DMT are God, and that religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, etc., originally believed that Entheogens are the true God.
