Fire Destroys Historic Arima Inari Shrine

A fire has destroyed multiple buildings at the historic Arima Inari Shrine in Kobe, damaging a religious site located near one of Japan’s most famous hot spring destinations.

The blaze broke out on the night of June 9 at the shrine grounds in Arimacho, Kita Ward, Kobe. According to police and fire authorities, emergency services received reports at around 9:30 p.m. that something was burning on a mountainside near the Arima Onsen area.

Authorities say the fire originated from the residence of the shrine’s chief priest. Firefighters battled the blaze for roughly five hours before bringing it under control, but three buildings were completely destroyed, including the priest’s home and the shrine office.

The chief priest and his wife, both in their 80s, suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The fire caused concern throughout the surrounding Arima Onsen district, which is lined with traditional inns and hotels catering to tourists. Some guests at a nearby hotel were temporarily relocated to another affiliated property as a precaution while firefighters worked to contain the flames.

Firefighting efforts were complicated by the shrine’s location. Access to the site requires climbing approximately 200 steps, making it difficult to transport equipment and personnel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Located above the Arima Onsen resort area, Arima Inari Shrine has long been a recognizable local landmark. The destruction of several buildings has prompted concern among residents and visitors alike as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
