Shizuoka Campus Preparations for the "Whole Campus Museum" themed exhibit are underway this spring and will open to the public on June 14, when the open campus is held. Natural History Museum, which closed in 2023, and Marine Science Museum, which closed to the public the following year, will display valuable specimens and materials throughout the campus to create an environment where students can experience oceanography and humanities in their daily lives. We aim to create an environment where students can come into contact with oceanography and the humanities. 2~ Building 4 corridors, the Marine Science Exhibit Hall (a.k.a. TOKATEN), Building 8 entrance and the library will be equipped with exhibit spaces, where faculty and student research results will also be displayed, making the entire campus a place of learning.
Each space is organized around themes such as "History of the Earth and the Sea," "The State of the Sea," "Marine Life," "Investigating the Sea," and "Specimens Speak for Themselves. Among the approximately 300 exhibits are specimens of deep-sea life from Suruga Bay, a stuffed Wataria albatross, a skeletal specimen of a giant horned deer, a stuffed megamouth shark, and marine research equipment, all designed to allow students to deepen their learning by observing real materials up close.
Shinichi Tomiyama, the curator who played a central role in preparing the exhibit, explains, "Our goal was to deepen students' learning and expand their intellectual curiosity through contact with the 'real thing'. We would like to utilize the book not only for classes and report writing in both the marine and humanities departments, but also for practical museum training for students who are seeking curatorial qualifications. We would also like to make the museum a place where students can learn practically by creating exhibits, organizing materials, and creating explanatory boards," he said. Hiroshi Saito, director of School of Marine Science and Technology, who also serves as director of the School of Marine Science and Technology museum, said, "In the future, we plan to open the museum to visitors from outside the university. We hope that kindergartners, children, and students who study at Shizuoka Campus will feel free to visit the museum.
