He shovels the neighbor’s driveway. He has a job. He is calm. So why do you feel like you are dying inside?

We have an image of abuse.

We think of holes in drywall. We think of screaming matches. We think of bruises.

But I speak to women. They suffer in silence. Their reality does not fit that box.

They sit in my office. They say, “He never calls me names. He never hits me. He is actually very calm.”

Then they ask, “Am I crazy? Am I too sensitive?”

This is the trick.

The covert abuser has a method. He abuses you quietly. He makes you question if it is abuse at all.

He is the “Nice Guy.” He helps with groceries. He goes to church. Your family loves him.

But behind closed doors? He is destroying you. And he never has to raise a hand.
