The Who "A quick one" (1966) mono vs. stereo differences.

Doesn't the 2003 have the original mix? The 1981 German LP on Polydor has the stereo mix for most of the songs. So Sad About Us is not in stereo there though but that song can be found.in stereo on the Happy Jack LP and CD.

 

Also, the HD download uses the original mixes when available*, other than So Sad About Us.

*Batman, Bucket T, Man With Money, and My Generation/Land of Hope and Glory don't have vintage stereo mixes.

I've always thought he's referencing the Ad-lib Club "At the Ad-lib, At the Ad-lib" - I'm probably wrong though!

 

The 2002/3 CD uses remixes for Run Run Run, Boris The Spider, I Need You, Heat Wave, Cobwebs and Strange, and So Sad About Us.

Yes about the German LP, although that was first released in 1972.

Sadly, the best digital version of So Sad About Us is the original MCA CD.

All were remixed in stereo again for the 2014 HD download.

Man With Money and My Generation/Land Of Hope and Glory were also mixed (for the first time?) in mono for the 2014 issue (they line up perfectly, but have slight differences so are not fold downs).

 

I always assumed it was some type of cabinet but that was just a guess.

 

And now I'm also trying to figure out what THIS dialog means.

 

Just that nobody has been able to do a proper stereo reissue of AQO yet.

 

Between us we probably can...

 

Access to the tape vaults would help.

That chatter in the middle of song is a "tribute" to Beatles talk at the table of Ad Lib club circa late 1965 where Keith befriended them.

That's missing the addition guitar from the mono after the solo.

 

Yeah but sadly I can't extract the guitar from the original mono mix...

Haven't read the thread yet but looking forward to, but wanted to post this, I don't know if I had noticed this before and then forgot about it but re: original stereo mix of Sad (mix and sound fwiw of which I just love) WTH is that 'sound' at about 2:35 in after the last chorus? It 'sounds like' John doing his 'Boris' or 'Summertime Blues' or "Instsant Party Mixture" deep (monster?) voice? It almost sounds like a 'talking burp!' to my ears. It's very odd, it just seems to come from out of nowhere.

It's near dead center in the mix, close to the same place, but later, than when Keith does one of his 'patented yells' early on around 0:55 in.

It's also in the stereo remix, both Keith and then the 'anomaly?' but they both sounded a bit more distant on the 2002 or 3 remixed stereo cd than on the 1967 original mix vinyl.

My listening source for So Sad was 1967 HJ vinyl on which to me the sound of that song especially is pretty exciting.

 

While we are on the subject of the many mixes of the Quick One material, does anyone have (or have heard) the Danish or Norway single version of "Run Run Run" (B-side of "Bucket T")? Reportedly it has a different mix (more prominent rhythm guitar than the LP mono mix), and the last few seconds have the tape running backwards! I am fascinated by this anomaly, but don't wish to pay over $200 for this rare single just for the chance to hear it.

Also, questions for lukpac - I have the French "Best of Who" Vol. 2 LP; is the true stereo So Sad About Us on that LP a needle drop? I am not aware of that true stereo mix ever being released in Europe in any form. And does the UK "Backtrack 3" LP contain a unique stereo mix of Disguises?

It's hard to tell for certain, since of course it is itself an LP, but the quality is quite good; better than I would expect a needledrop of the Happy Jack LP to be.

Backtrack 3 has the normal stereo mix of Disguises. It also has the stereo mixes of I'm A Boy and Run Run Run. Interestingly, those 3 specific tracks were issued in stereo on CD in the UK before any other AQO stereo mixes (on 30 Years, Who's Better Who's Best, and the 1995 AQO CD respectively), and those 3 transfers sound better than any of the more recent transfers from the German tapes, which have a high end roll-off.

Luke, I see what you mean re: if it was a John vocal it should be left/right. I will double-check it. Keith's 'yell' from the kit mics I suppose around 0:55 in comes close to the middle/center of the mix? Where the drums are which would make sense. Unfortunately, I cannot unhear what I'm hearing around 2:35 in. I'll check it later tonight and try to figure out exactly when , where, and explain better what I'm hearing there. It's a quick (tumbling? rumbling?) unpleasant 'very' low-pitched sound that almost sounds like a horror-movie sound effect but like a voice. It could be the voices in my head but I don't think so . Anybody else hear what I'm describing (not the voices in my head lol) please chime in? Could it be something that leaked from the mic'd drums or maybe there's a simpler explanation for it.[/QUOTE]
