I wish it were real. I'd get it in a heartbeat. Played that set to death in 2002.

I had an unofficial 40 Licks vinyl box set.

Some songs such as Tumbling Dice sounded like alternate mixes, but I think it was just a mastering or pressing error and only one channel was used.

 

Call me crazy, but Im starting to look at getting the studio album collection instead lol. Keep GRRR as a comp. Maybe look into Jump Back and Hot Rocks down the road.

As someone who is unmotivated to explore the Stones catalog post Some Girls, I find HONK to be a good sampling of the 70s/80s and beyond.

It's also a really pretty package for $27.99—the photo collage in the gatefold I love.

I have the 2LP Target exclusive blue-red vinyl. And the live "Wild Horses" with Florence Welch is a real keeper.

 

I don't consider that crazy at all. I would consider doing that myself. But the only two RS proper albums I'm missing on LP, at this point, are Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon. And I figure that they'll eventually do stand-alone releases of those, if I wait long enough. So, it just doesn't seem to be worth the price for me. (And the headache of selling off the remainder of the box).

But if you don't have most of those albums, the boxed set is a good way to go. Despite what some might say, I don't really think the Stones have released very many bad albums. And everything from Voodoo Lounge onward has been quite good, IMO. Bridges to Babylon is probably the weakest. But even that album is terribly underrated, IMO. And both Voodoo Lounge and A Bigger Bang are shockingly good. I say: Go for it.

 

The track selection is aces on Honk. But the SQ, as I've mentioned before, is terrible. I sold mine back

 

yup I agree, thanks, now what to do for 64-69 , seems like the mono releases are the way to go, vinyl prices are too pricey. may need to look at the cd's or hi-res downloads I guess...
Edit - forget about the cd's , seems to be a lot of fakes out there, hi-res might be the better route and may even sound better.

 

I'm used to hearing Stones songs mostly on the radio. This sounds fine to me haha.

 

In that case, if you don't care at all about SQ, then just get the CD's. They're much cheaper and more convenient.

 

Instead of more pointless comps, a vinyl compilation of all their non-album tracks from '71 onward would be an instant buy. Skip the remixes and live tracks and just do the actual songs, including the studio cuts from Flashpoint, the 4 songs from Forty Licks, the two from Grrrr, and all the b-sides. It'd be a solid 2-LP set that I'm sure Stones geeks would be into having.

 

I burned a cdr like that a few years ago. I need to find it again.

 

I did it as a playlist before. There are too many throaways (the Steel Wheels b-sides especially) and it didn't really flow, but those kind of albums never really do. But having decent mastering of the 2002 and 2012 songs (which I mostly like) on an actual LP would be worth it, I think.

What about the bonus tracks from the Exile and Some Girls sets that received overdubs and vocals added by Mick? Those are technically "new" songs as well. "Plundered My Soul", "So Divine," etc...

 

Yeah. I think "Plundered" belongs, not sure about the Some Girls stuff. There's no version of this that would please everyone, but no matter what it'd be more interesting than another hits compilation.

 

I'd buy it on the spot.

 

BTW, I'm assuming you own GRRR on vinyl? If so, how does it sound? I've thought many times about buying that vinyl set (It's not outrageously expensive, even now), but I hadn't heard anything about SQ.

Even so, I refuse to get it because of that godawful cover!
