That makes it pretty clear why not all longtime collectors are salivating to $pend.

Collectors certainly have all those tracks on the original albums already, though

I could maybe see someone who doesn't have Jump Back wanting to collect the edits on the 1CD version of Honk but what is the use of another "Shattered" when you have at least two copies of Some Girls? Or I guess if you're @Clanceman — 839 copies! ;)

It's funny but the omission of Shattered is a huge deal for me on this set. I love the Rewind CD but I had to make my own playlist that adds Shattered and She's So Cold to it. Other tunes I would have liked to see on Honk (but I can understand them not being there) One Hit, Hang Fire, Too Much Blood, Little T&A, Neighbors, Time Waits, All Down The Line, Can't You Hear Me Knockin', If You Can't Rock Me, Dance Little Sister. Not the biggest hits there, but I remember them all getting quite a bit of airplay on the local FM radio back in the day (except maybe Time Waits).

It's interesting because Shattered only charted at #31 in the U.S. and was not released as a single in the U.K. There are quite a few omitted tracks which charted higher in the U.S. than Shattered. However, the track has been included in quite a few of the previous compilations as you can see from the list I compiled above.

This was posted on IORR today. I believe the comparison is between the Canadian version and European version of Honk.

Some tracks on this CD have different timings/edits comparing to regular 2CD/3CD edition from Europe. It seems that they utilized mixes from GRRR! for the following tracks

Miss You (3:35) aka single edit from Jump Back
Fool To Cry (4:07) aka short version from Sucking in the 70s
Beast of Burden (3:30) aka short version from Sucking in the 70s
It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It) (4:11) edit from 40 Licks
Mixed Emotions (4:00) aka 7” version, CD Single, Jump Back
Don't Stop (3:30) edit from CD Single
Rain Fall Down (4:02) radio edit, CD single, not censored
Undercover of the Night (4:14) edit from 40 Licks
Emotional Rescue (3:43) edit from 40 Licks
Saint of Me (4:09) radio edit, CD single
All tracks could also be found on GRRR!!!

Hard to blame the record companies for releasing a steady stream of compilation packages , the casual Stones fan will jump at these . Myself who own all the original recordings steer clear of the greatest hits albums , I can make my own ! on a cdr , when I'm sick of it I can throw it on the road and make another one. Most big stones fans own the originals but we are outnumbered by the casual fans . The One I did buy recently was Grrr but only because I wanted the blu-ray audio . Its all about the bucks $$$$$

I realized Grrr and Honk are both noises animals make. Maybe there will be a running theme; Bawk!, or Moo!, or Woof!, or maybe Hee-haw! Or maybe they are noises Keith makes. The next one might be Cough!, or Hack!, or Wheeze!, or that sound you make when you're about to spit; Ckckckckckckckkckckwht! Maybe the next one will be called Expire.

70's era Stones is my favorite era, Honk is a beast, 3hrs & 16mins of great Stones tunes, BTW Which other band could put out a comp like this? - Now streaming on Spotify premium. Enjoy! (this thread has been great reading so far)

Yes, but some of us are either unwilling or unable to pay the asking price for that particular boxed set, when all we want is 3-4 albums in the set. They should use the same stampers to reissue all of the titles individually. That would be more fair for the consumer. And at this point, it would probably make good business sense, as I can't imagine that I'm the only person who feels this way.

Well, I just finally got my copy of the 3-LP Honk set from Amazon. Sadly, it is as we all expected. Squashed sound to the extent that all peaks sound like there's a buzzsaw constantly running over the rest of the music. One big, ugly smudge of a record.

Can't say I'm terribly surprised. But I am disappointed. I didn't even make it through the entire set, as I started to get a headache. So, I just sighed, put on my copy of Rewind, and imagined what could have been.

It is - the price is back up to $25.

I bought at $15 just for the live CD.

Though honestly, I think it's a nice compilation overall because it spotlights some lesser-known songs. Yeah, it has a bunch of warhorses, too, but it's still an enjoyable package in and of itself...

I don’t find it weird. So he completely owns his music and it’s only available to rent, no? I think that’s the objective - and what little audience is alienated by this strategy, my guess is the near-term gain is probably worth it financially and the long-term gain is almost certainly worth it financially.

IMO, there will be no digital music (except used physical discs) available to purchase within 10 years - and quite possibly within 5 years. And I suspect vinyl may fall in that camp too if sales show any decline.

It appears Stones, Inc doesn’t agree though. Their recent history with box sets is no individual titles later on. They probably figure if they open that door, folks will balk at future box set sales. If I was their management, I would do exactly the same.

I find it weird that music ownership - a paradigm that has existed for over a century - may now be ending. That's weird to me. YMMV.

How many complete career-spanning boxed sets have they had?

I meant "complete career-spanning boxed set," as in: one that collects all of their albums in one boxed set. They've only done that once. So, trying to extrapolate that they would not release the albums from that boxed set individually is quite a leap. marcb is basing his generalization on literally no examples.
