Upcoming Rolling Stones release "Honk"

There are a few songs on the 2009 Jump Back CD that are single edits, but aside from that its mastering is identical to Honk

 

I used the '90s Virgin album issues to confirm the original album track times and can confirm that the 3CD edition of HONK uses the album versions for all tracks (not taking the new live CD into consideration, of course).

If a song wasn't released in the Virgin era I used the CD of the original issue to confirm the track time.

The one disc edition of HONK uses a number of edits in order to fit so many tracks on one disc.

There are likely other edits scattered on various singles, but I only noted the tracks on compilations above.

 

I know that Honk continues to use the 2009 compressed remasters, but it does not sound exactly like my 2009 Jump Back or 2012 GRRR CDs, there are slight differences in the sound quality. I think HONK (and the fans) would have benefited from all-new remastering this time around.

 

As you can see in @mikeja75 's excellent post above, the Jump Back and GRRR! versions use different edits/mixes that sound different and have different (sometimes better) dynamic range. That could account for the differences you're hearing

 

Thanks for that info, it's good to know, but I am referring more to the EU source being used here...I don't like how this sounds to be honest...my U.S. Jump Back and U.S. GRRR! comps have stronger tone and sound fuller in the midrange too, but this EU HONK comp lacks that for whatever reason. I might now buy the U.S. HONK 3CD set to see if I like that better.

I have discovered that there can be sound quality differences sometimes between a U.S. and EU CD of the same title.

 

Where the edits don't differ, I think you'll find it's the same mastering. Which makes a difference, if it's not the same. Whether the manufacturing of the disc makes a difference is... a debate for another day... but it can't possibly be as big of a difference as the mastering being different

 

Meanwhile, I'd like to hear some detailed reviews of the vinyl. The DR levels sound pretty awful for the CD's. But since they master vinyl differently, there exists at least the possibility that it might sound decent. But I haven't heard much yet. And that's not typically a good sign.

Honk sounds fine in the car, but for detailed listening it's hard to believe that GRRR! can be looked at as an audiophile treasure when you compare the two.

Looking and listening to the various compilations and albums, it confirms that the Virgin and CBS releases from the '80s and '90s still stand out in the RS catalog when compared to what we've had since the 2009 (UMG). Along with the Japanese mini LP releases from awhile back are really the best way to digitally own the Stones' post 1971 releases.

 

Other than the Japanese SHM-SACD versions of course. Those are the best digital releases.

 

I have them and I agree, but these are largely out of print and some titles are getting a bit on the pricey side -- it's unfortunate that they're not easily available to anyone that wants them at a reasonable price.

 

I went ahead and listened to parts of "The Singles 1971-1999" and parts of "Honk" on Apple Music thanks to this thread. Discovered that I really like a lot of the later period singles, more than I previously thought!

 

I've never heard the SHM CD's. But I've got the ABKCO SACD's and the Virgin remasters from the '90's. And I'm quite happy with all of those. I just wish they had a decent sounding remaster series for the past several albums.

 

Thanks so much for that info. I had no desire to buy this but the colored vinyl bug just bit me. Dang it. And there was one left at the Target down the block from me. Not anymore.

 

Well, for all the naysayers asking, "Why do we need another Stones comp?" there's your answer.

 

The vinyl box from last year sounded great, I don't foresee those later albums ever sounding better than that

Unlikely. It looks like the 2xLP version (if not the others as well) uses the same edits as the 1xCD edition and those were not remastered as part of the vinyl box

 

I'm actually referring to the 3-LP version. I'm hoping that one will be the same. Sorry. Should have been more specific.

Yeah. Hadn't thought about that. Those album sides are going to run long even with the single edits. With the album versions, I don't even want to think about it. Oh, well...there goes that idea.

 

I understand I always have loved vinyl but I really like colored vinyl it’s unique and the sound is just as good as black vinyl IMO enjoy I picked a copy up as well
