My reaction after hearing the awful "Ed Sheeran" 'live' version of Beast Of Burden.
Why does Jagger constantly feel the need to include these lame kids in the Stone's live sets? He forced Justin Timberlake on us back in 2003 and it was just horrible. Then he did the same dirty trick to us a few years later by bringing Carrie Underwood on the stage with them here in Toronto.
Embarrassing.

 

There are miss prints as well on the live track list on the deluxe edition on the back of the sleeve and booklet.

Wild Horses wasn’t 22/5 what it says it was 25/5 and Let’s Spend the Night Together was at Old Trafford not Manchester Evening News Arena. How do they get these things wrong? Ridiculous.

 

Got the Deluxe colored vinyl today. Tri-fold and a single lp of the live stuff, all housed in hard slip case. Nice package! Settleing in for a evenings listen

 

2013? They had a guest (practically?) every night, and yes, most of them were bewildering. I guess it can't be Tom Waits every night. (The prize-winner on that tour, unless you count Mick Taylor.)

Sometimes it gets hit out of the park, sometimes it doesn't. Just like almost every Stones tour since 1963.

Sometimes it's clearly a cynical marketing move, but sometimes they pair up with someone who is on it. (Who knew that Katy Perry was such a pro???) I wouldn't give you a fig for Katy Perry or John Mayer, but their appearances with the Stones were great. Enhanced both the guests and the Stones in my esteem. I'll take "Under the Boardwalk" with Aaron Neville (someone I never paid much attention to. Sorry.) over another YGMR any day.

But people who got stuck with Taylor Swift, Timberlake, etc... you have my sympathies. They're simply not up to ... anything. I love Lady Gaga to death, and she aces EVERY guest spot with everyone from Sting to Elton to a cast of thousand Muppets, but she was meh with the Stones (IMHO).

 

Gimme Shelter indeed.

 

I'm streaming the live "Honk" cuts on Amazon Unlimited, and since Amazon has the WORST-sounding streams on the Internet (tm), I won't pass judgment, but Brad Paisley just started singing and an already mediocre slog just flipped to ... I finally had to just stop. Florence's vocal chops were a treat and cut through the Amazon muck, but I still find WH an overplayed song, so...

(Again, I've learned from experience that Amazon's streams don't do anybody's music any favors. But I got 3 free months of Unlimited for buying an MP3. So this is not a hit job on the live "Honk" cuts, necessarily, although Jagger stays pretty annoying and I don't see myself auditioning other versions.)

I imported the 3 LP edition from Amazon UK. Has anyone who has listened to this 3 LP edition (or I imagine the 4 LP Deluxe USA edition) noticed any radio edits or shortened versions of songs? I swear some of them fade out quicker than I remember (Out of Control, Rock and a Hard Place, Rain Fall Down, and Streets of Love are some that come to mind). It seems like the Spotify edition and likely the CD edition as well have the full versions of all the songs based on running times. Maybe the vinyl has some of the edits in order to squeeze them all into the LPs? I looked online and see no references to song running times on the vinyl versions.

For what it's worth, I am enjoying this compilation. The later-day material fits in with the earlier stuff, and the flow is great.

So, I'm hearing a lot of people talking about getting the LP set(s). Can anyone post a SQ review? I've been hearing rather dreadful reviews of the CD's, but I'm curious how the vinyl sounds.

BTW, anyone else have an axe to grind with Amazon? I ordered this set over two weeks ago, and now they're telling me that it may be June 13th before I get my copy (of the 3-LP set). Why even bother pre-ordering, if they can't get it to you on the release date?

And this is not the first time Amazon has pulled this stunt. In fact, it's really starting to get tiresome, at this point. Anybody else have similar experiences with them?

Anyway, rant over. But while I'm waiting, I would like to hear someone's thoughts on the SQ. So, if you'd like to post, it would be much appreciated.

 

Opening at No.8 (6,514 sales), it is the band’s 39th Top 10 album according to the official UK album chart

 

I liked the fact it skipped the 60s. I've enough versions of satisfaction and paint it black.

The 70s onwards fit together nicely and 'production' wise doesn't jar as much between decades that the inclusion of the 60s would bring.

 

"Honk" will probably go down as the definitive Ron Wood compilation.

 

Not disappointing at all, really.

 

That was my thinking as well. Plus, despite the duplications of "Wild Horses" and "Brown Sugar," this still makes an excellent companion piece to Hot Rocks / More Hot Rocks. Especially on vinyl, since there's really nothing else like it on the market (unless you count Rewind, which is pretty limited). I've already got mine ordered from Amazon. Looking forward to hearing it. Might spin my Hot Rocks / More Hot Rocks a few times in anticipation.

 

That 6,500 sales gets you into the UK top ten is hard to believe.

Sad sign of the times. Makes you wonder how long they'll even keep making physical product.

 

In the 60s and 70s, 6,500 first week sales would get you dropped by your label. The only raison d’être for this release is to compete with Spotify’s This Is The Rolling Stones playlist and to squeeze a few hundred grand out of the remaining collectors and completists who will shell out for the four LP + t-shirt bundle. But, paradoxically, until physical product is canceled outright, those collectors and completists will enjoy ever-more-lavish physical products like this one, as the labels do try to squeeze the last dollars out of those will pay for an $80 vinyl box set.

 

I saw Brad Paisley live in 2018 and was quite surprised at how good he is live, especially his extended guitar solos. I think that the live "Dead Flowers" on "Honk," with Paisley, is quite enjoyable. Paisley's guitar solo is the hottest solo on this track.

I also like the tracks with Dave Grohl and Florence Welch on "Honk". I like to listen to them. As I gain enjoyment listening to these tracks, I am not thinking of all of the reasons why a cool person should not like them. I am superficial that way.

Ed Sheeran opened for the Rolling Stones when I saw them in Kansas City, Missouri. The "Beast of Burden" track on "Honk" was recorded at that Kansas City, Missouri, show. He did not seem to be the type of artist who should ideally be the opening act for the Rolling Stones, whatever his musical merits. He is just too laid back. When I heard this live, his contributions to "Beast of Burden" were not evident. He was a blending voice when I saw this track performed live.

 

Yeah, and there are even starting to be artists who don't release physical product. For instance, I like what I've heard from Chance the Rapper. But he doesn't even sell downloads on iTunes or Amazon. Nor does he sell CD's or vinyl records. So, the only way I can listen to him is on YouTube or Spotify, and I can't get downloads either place (unless I'm using video conversion software on YouTube).

I find that really weird that you would intentionally reject a potential audience by leaving them out of the distribution cycle. But with Tidal exclusives and the like, it's becoming increasingly more popular. Soon, you won't be able to own music at all. Kind of sad, but what can you do?
