    以前、河内将芳氏が上梓した『戦国時代の京都を歩く』という著作を読んだ事があり、とても面白かったので本書も手にしてみた。

    勿論、京都に関する案内書や歴史書は幾らでも出版されているのだが、同氏は新しい視点で日頃気付かない京都の実像に迫ってくれる所が何とも興味深いのだ。

    …そんな河内氏が本書で注目したのは「大路」と「少路」。

    今回も、本書を片手に知られざる京都の世界へ、いざ、出発である。

    本書は先ず“上京と下京”に着目したプロローグに始まり、続いて、第一部「戦国時代の都市・京都」第二部「惣構の中の竪小路・横小路」で構成されている。

    《上杉本洛中洛外図屏風》を主な史料として用いる所は冒頭に紹介した『戦国時代の～』と同じだが、今回は徹底的に「路」に拘り抜いている事は言う迄もなく、“碁盤の目”のように整備された路に依って区画された街作り、防衛、人々の往来にも言及しているので、改めて日々の生活の中で如何に“路”が果たす役割が大きいかを実感するであろう。

    いや…それだけではない。

    例えば、ルイス・フロイスが「ヨーロッパの路は中央が低く、日本は中央が高い」と指摘している所からは、同じく“水はけ”を目的としたものでも発想の違いがあった事を知って興味深かったし、或いは祇園祭の山鉾巡行や烏丸通に位置した公衆便所など、行事や日常生活に密接した“路”について詳述しているので、非常に多くを学ぶ事が出来る。

    更には、多くの史料を以て戦国時代に活躍した信長や秀吉を具体的に挙げながら、路を中心とした京都の姿を再現してくれる著作として、実に新鮮であった。

    そしてもう一点、特筆したいのは図版（然も全てカラー）の多さである。

    先に挙げた《上杉本洛中洛外図屏風》の主要場面を内容に則して拡大掲載しているのは勿論の事、地図や写真も駆使して臨場感を盛り上げてくれるのだ。

    また、古記録は全て現代語訳が載っているし、読者を楽しく戦国京都の世界に導こうとする姿勢が垣間見られる丁寧な編集に、思わず頭が下がった次第である。

    勿論“路”という限定したテーマである事から、初心者向きのようでいて、実は、かなりマニアックな側面もあるかもしれない。

    然しながら、非常にコンパクトな上に「読んで解り易い、見て楽しい」構成なので、京都が好きな方、戦国時代に関心のある方、古美術に造詣の深い方なら誰もが満喫出来ると思うので、幅広い読者層にお薦め出来る一冊と言えよう。

    人物をメインに語られがちな京都ですが、道に焦点を当てることで、違った歴史が見えてきます。

    地図やイラストがふんだんに掲載されているので、イメージがつきやすい。

    応仁の乱後にどう京都が変化したのか学ぶには、とても良い本だと思います。

    人物が主人公になる、このシリーズのなかで変わり種だな～って思って読んでみた。地図や写真が多くて、わかりやすかった。あと、京都のイラストが見開きでのっててきれいだったな。詳しく知りたい人には物足りないかもだけど、初心者にはぴったりの内容だった。
