A little wrap-up for the Safe Mode wardriving contest: Total WiFi seen: 1,599,337 New WiFi seen: 1,262,832 2020-08-08 set a new single-day record for new WiFi: 716,696 People ran, walked, skated, drove and biked. You crazy hackers are the best.
Apologies to our users. We're experiencing some problems that will result in degradation of service. To those who are causing this issue: WiGLE exists as a resource because of the goodwill of the community. If you attempt to abuse that community, we do what we must.
Somehow this hobby project has lasted for 23 years - a truly epic run. Hobbyists, security researchers, and tireless walkers/runners/drivers/skaters/riders: thank you for being a part of a delightfully weird and creative community & making this project a success. Props and Skidoo
Somehow WiGLE is 18 today. Three more years and it will be able to order a drink. Thank you to all you crazy wardrivers, netstumblers, hackers, loggers, phreaks, SIGINT pros, and all our other supporters. It literally exists because of you.
Due to extensive abuse, we've had make changes, including switching to an email-verification model on registration. This isn't our preferred solution, recent events have made it necessary. Reach out in email with questions - we do what we do to make this project work.
To our anonymous malicious actor(s): this is far from the first time someone has tried the things you think are working, and you're far from the best at it.
No matter how many times we post this, people keep doing it. If you're going to run a training using WiGLE.net where everyone registers together, you should really contact us first. We *will* tap the sign as many times as it takes.
To any WiGLE users out there doing something dangerous: be safe first - you’re more important than dots on maps.
IF you’re not thinking about privacy when you design systems, you’re doing the world a great disservice. Some jackasses might collect it all and make a giant map of it or something. Then where would we be?
Got a report of someone masquerading as WiGLE, claiming they’ll pay people for WiFi data. 1. All “real” contact info is listed on our website - wigle.net - if it’s not there, it’s not us. 2. We’re a community project and an open database - we don’t pay for data.
When you take our open source code and re-package it in your scammy, banned-from-every-reputable-app-store APK, but don’t remove our error reporting from your nasty little binary… we see you.
CONGRATULATIONS! Scoring is now closed for the 31 #WWWD. THANK YOU to everyone who made this possible, but the RFHS and DEF CON to each person who picked up a phone or build a rig. Final numbers forthcoming once the queue has been processed.
We are pleased to announce that this year's World Wide War Drive will be a shorter, 60 hour long format: Noon on Friday the 19th of July -> Midnight Sunday the 21st of July (all times Pacific "DEF CON" time)
If you crack the key on the ISS’ WiFi, does that technically count as hacking a space station? Is it space piracy?
Somehow, we end up doing this every few years. Dear harvester, you've wasted a great deal of time, and we suspect a great deal of money. Have you *looked* at what you've gotten for it? Hope your kneecaps are safe, maybe watch out for open upper-story windows. hugz, WiGLE.
