I started playing Moonrise Fall.

First 5 minutes:

“Wow, this is beautiful.”

After 15 minutes:

“This is really beautiful.”

After 25 minutes:

“Okay, so when does the game actually start?”

Don’t get me wrong—the visuals here really deserve praise. The forest looks atmospheric, the pixel art is pleasant, and the soundtrack sets the right mood. You can tell they put a lot of love into crafting the atmosphere.

But then it hits you.

You walk.

You look around.

You take pictures.

You walk again.

And look again.

At some point, I began to suspect that the game was actually photographing me and studying how long a person is capable of wandering aimlessly.

The biggest mystery of Moonrise Fall isn’t the mystical creatures or the secrets of the forest.

The biggest mystery is what the game’s concept even is.

Either it’s such a brilliant concept that it’s hard to grasp. Or there simply is no concept.

I have no other options left.

I honestly tried to get into what was happening, but the more I played, the stronger the feeling became that the game confuses “atmosphere” with “gameplay.”

In the end, I can say this:

+ Beautiful visuals.

+ Decent sound.

+ Atmosphere.

- Boring.

- Very boring.

- So boring that the forest started to feel like the most active character in the game.

If you enjoy taking a leisurely stroll through a mysterious forest and figuring out the meaning of what’s happening on your own—you might like this game.

But if you’re expecting the game to actively participate in the process, you might have some questions.

A lot of questions.

An atmospheric walking simulator with a genuinely tragic story behind it.

If you like slow-paced indie gems where you explore and solve puzzles, this is definitely worth your time—especially since it recently became free to keep for a limited time.

The Good:
+ Beautiful, immersive atmosphere and dynamic music.
+ The environmental puzzles aren't overly difficult; some can even be brute-forced if you get stuck.
+ 100% achievements are not permanently missable, so you can always backtrack and clean them up later.

The Bad:
- The walking pace is incredibly slow.

For your sanity: The character moves so slowly that walking diagonally actually makes you feel like you are going way faster. Trust me, use it.

Overall, it's a short and rewarding experience for achievement hunters (around 70+ collectibles to find).

If you are going for the 100% completion and don't want to waste hours backtracking or getting lost in the woods, I’ve put together a full walkthrough with all achievements:

I played Moonrise Fall thinking I'd spend 30 minutes casually exploring a forest.

Seven hours later I was sprinting through the woods at 2 AM, interrogating rocks, following a deer like it owed me money, and treating every random sound effect like I was cracking a government conspiracy.

The game somehow turned me into the world's least qualified detective. Every clue had me thinking, "Aha! The mystery is coming together!" It was not. I was just lost again.

The atmosphere is incredible. The forest feels alive, the music is beautiful, and the whole experience is weirdly immersive. At some point I stopped playing a game and started aggressively trespassing in nature.

It's short, but unlike my Steam backlog, it actually respects my time.

Pros:
✔ Gorgeous environment
✔ Relaxing soundtrack
✔ Fun exploration
✔ Interesting mystery
✔ Deer with significantly higher intelligence than the player

Final Verdict:

I entered the forest as a functioning adult.

I left as a sleep-deprived cryptid chasing a deer through the wilderness while connecting clues with the confidence of a man who has never been right about anything.

10/10. The deer carried the investigation and honestly deserves top billing. 🦌👍🌙

I got this game because I saw it was free & seemed interesting. So I hopped in & the intro was good with the art & music. Then it puts you into a starter type area so I walked around and learned a little about how the camera works & to pick up the pink candles (they are crystals but I think they look like candles) Good start so far not bad. It then puts me fully into the game area so I started to explore & quickly realizes that it didn't explain nearly enough to me.

1. I learned about half way through exploring one area that you have a journal that gives you clues on how to find the creatures.
2. The glowing green pillars are interactable & are mega important for you to interact with so you can translate the symbols. Yea I found that out in the second area.
3. So they taught you how to change time & I was working on the tic-tac-toe puzzle & it said the time of day was "late evening". Well I ignored the "late" part & put the time at evening. WRONG it was late night. I spent so long on that puzzle when that confusion could've been prevented by using a word that wasn't a different time of day.
4. Did you know when your lantern glows that means you're near something worthwhile? I spent so long trying to figure out if the light points in a direction or glows brighter when you get closer to the right place. This was never explained.
tbh I start ranting, my bad
5. There is a puzzle where you need to stand by a tree & light in one area & in that area there are THREE different places that I think could've qualified for that description. I spent so much time on that for no reason. (Will say the vibes in that area were very good once you've figured it out)
6. In one of the caves area there was an easter egg about these tape recordings that was in the early development of the game. And bro, those literally explained half the things I was missing since it didn't explain.
7. So there are dungeons you unlock after catching so many creatures & I went through 3 of them. The puzzles in the dungeons were cool & fitted the theme BUT I had to do them like 5-10 times in each dungeon. Bro never heard of the rule of threes.
8. The intro sets it up like there is going to be a bit of lore, but you never seem to learn anything new about the character as you're progressing through the story?

Anyways, I think this game has a lot of potential & isn't necessarily bad. They just need more explanation on how and where you can use the tools the game gave you. Then they need to cut back on the number of puzzles in one dungeon area. When I entered the first one I remember being confused as I just kept doing another puzzle & another & another...

If someone has trouble with the puzzles I stopped right as I got into the Falls area & I can run you through how to do them all as there aren't tutorials online.

cool game.
if the walking speed is too slow though change the settings (there's a dev post in discussions that tells you how to do so) to match your screen's refresh rate. zoom through things in 240 Hz

There is almost no guidance so newbies get stuck fast n quit early. The only good point is the forest atmosphere turns out pretty nice. Yet puzzles feel cheap n the game drags along too slowly which gets players bored easily.

I've only played 20 minutes, but so far, almost nothing has happened.
Movement speed is really slow.
I love the graphics and sound, but I'm still wondering if the game's started yet.
It would be great if there was a big map of all the forest paths because it's tough to navigate through everything.
I love the look and the story is intriguing, but the gameplay needs some work.

Either the free games made my expectations low or this is lowkey good? It's not a game, its a cozy pixel art enviorment you walk in and occtionally interact with something. If your fun can be reduced to the WASD keys you are gonna have a blast. It's an intense game for hard core gamers if you can't handle that move on. Attention span will slip

The atmosphere is nice, but the gameplay is missing.

All puzzles are braindead easy to solve making it more of a walking simulator than anything else, and none of them really seem to have a reason to be in the game in the first place other than puzzles for the sake of puzzles

The "hints" for photographing creatures are not subtle at all making it more like following a guide saying "go here and do this, then the creature will appear". Creatures also take extra inputs to photograph just for the sake of doing so, which adds no value and just makes the game even slower.

Throughout the entire game I thought I was missing the point of the story, and that all would be revealed at the end. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case, as the ending doesn't even give you any new information that you didn't already see at the intro

Unless you get the game for free, enjoy beautiful atmospheres and "puzzles" tuned to the level of a 4 year old, do not play this. The game is incredibly short anyway, so if you're really curious you might as well watch a gameplay video really quickly

Fun and easy to finish, as there's no prerequisite for an ending. Only downsides are how tediously slow walking around is and the fact that it gives you little to no instructions on some of the mechanics, leaving you to do a lot of backtracking for the missed items. Despite the teleportation checkpoints, backtracking is quite a handful, and was not bothered to do it. However, if you're interested in an easy game to reach 100%, you might try to give it a shot.
In terms of atmosphere and gameplay it's decent, if you're into logical puzzles and have some patience to finish them in one sitting. Experienced some minor bugs but they didn't affect my overall experience
