There’s something seriously satisfying about spinning up a Proxmox homelab — containers launching in seconds, VMs booting up like clockwork, and the whole system humming along. But then you glance at your SSD’s wearout percentage and… ouch. Some folks are seeing 90% wear in under a year or even 195% with just 20TB written. That’s not ideal.
So what’s going on? Most of the time, it’s Proxmox’s defaults running a bit too hot for consumer-grade SSDs. Logging, write-heavy configurations, and ZFS with all its quirks can wear drives out fast. Proxmox is awesome — open-source, powerful, and great for running all kinds of virtual setups. But its default configuration loves to write. ZFS is a big part of the problem with high write amplification, and Proxmox’s non-stop logging doesn’t help either.
