studentsoftheswordOk! Going to Nagoya tomorrow to meet a lady friend who is taking her 6 Dan kendo grading there on Sunday. As we all know, it is tradition to bring gifts of some sort in Japanese culture. So, instead of going and buying something, I will make KENDO COOKIES!! My only problem now is how to go about this... What shape should I do... Hmmm...#kendo COOKIES!!#kendo#6 dan#gifts1
studentsoftheswordHad a great day today!Started stressfully though as the other English teacher was sick and suddenly I was taking his morning kids class! All went well though, got through the afternoon classes and met my boyfriend at the train station before going and getting delicious ramen, hitting up a game center, shopping at a really cool store where we bought an electric fly swat! And then stopped by the convenience store on the way home to cure our cravings! I am now cooking him his favourite cookies and he is playing xbox :3 Nice change to a stressful last two weeks, but things are looking up from here! Going to Nagoya on Sunday to watch my friend take a 6 Dan kendo exam and then probably chilling the rest of the weekend away with DVDs! Not really kendo related, but felt like posting something :)#kendo11
studentsoftheswordWadokan Training 07/05/12Today was by far the hardest I have experienced at Wadokan!!!
So it is the first day back from the Golden Week holiday, which meant there were quite a few sensei there tonight. It was cute though because they are all warming up to me, and they all talked to me and laughed with me tonight as if I was a friend! As I was parking my bike outside the dojo at the beginning, one of them came up and gave me a gift! An official 60 year memorial tenegui of the Nippon Kendo Renmei! T^T
I only had two fights tonight, one with the sensei who gave me the tenegui, and one with the main 8 dan sensei.
The first fight was hard, we did jikeiko for over ten minutes, and I kept dropping my zanshin too quickly! Argh! But it was good anyway! He is a really nice sensei, even if he does make me do the dreaded uchi komi geiko, but I learn heaps every time.
I was stuffed after the first fight so I ran upstairs and had a drink. Someone had turned the lights off, so I sat there for a bit, practicing my breathing, and cheekily contemplating hiding up there so I didn't have to have another fight (I had a nap before I left which I am never doing again because it left me SO TIRED), but I ended up thinking some motivational thoughts and went down and lined up for the main 8 dan sensei, who is the king of tiring, gut busting, sick inducing kendo practices.
I have never been pushed that far past my limit before. I was almost crying. We had probably a 10 minute jikeiko session before he started me doing uchi komi geiko. Oh man, if I was stuffed before, I was dead now. He kept yelling ONE MORE! ONE MORE! MEN! MEN! MORE VOICE! FASTER ASHI! MEN! KOTE MEN! KOTE MEN DOU! over and over again. He gave me short rests in between each round of the uchi komi, but I was starting to feel dizzy. And to finish he had me do kirikaeishi, the entire length of the dojo. But the final men I screamed what little I had left in me, and dealt him the biggest blow I could muster!
Once that was over I hobbled to the side and crouched down, puffing, wheezing and trying not to fall over and die. (srsly)
At the end he told me I had a strong kamae, nice men cuts, but my voice needs to be as if everyone in the dojo NEEDS to look at how strong I am. No matter the strength you are, your kiai needs to inform everyone in the room that you demand attention, you are the strongest. ha! Also my follow through needs work, and if I miss a first cut I need to immediately go for a second - whether it be a men, kote or dou, he said if you miss, don't stop, go for a second attempt straight away. Good advice!
And then I rode home, (I am getting faster~ fitness level improving~ only 30 minutes each way now~~ woohoo!)
Sadly though, boyfriend won't get paid until midnight tonight, so we can't go and have dinner... ;-;
Overall though, good night!#wadokan#tired as#uuuuuuu11

studentsoftheswordWadokan Training 04/04/12This will be a short post, as there were only 4 people there last night including me - and it was only a half an hour session because of the holidays!Basically it was just me, one of the lovely ladies, a senpai who is uber strong and some old guy who really pissed me off. Its sad to have to say that, but he was really rude. The senpai basically told us to take pairs and then rotate so we could fight each other and and do kihon waza as we pleased, he took the role of sensei so he issued the instructions and was the main go-to-guy for a tough workout. I started with him first, the the lady which were both awesome fights. I worked on my men cuts which are still evolving from my old style, and are still giving me a hard time to get correctly. So after this, it was me and the old guy up to practice together. Though, instead of practicing, he went and stood in the corner and wouldn't even LOOK at me. He pretended that he was watching the other two, while it was blatantly obvious he was avoiding having to fight me. I was so taken aback. Was it because I was a foreigner? Or a young person? Probably both. I probably wasn't worth his time, even though I seem to be worth everyone elses. Man I was so angry!!And to top it off, at the end after uchi komi geiko, we all finished, lined up did mokuso etcetc and I went and walked up to him and said the thank you greeting, and he just IGNORED ME.Seriously, what an ass. Sorry but I don't care how old you are, what nationality you are, where you come from, how GOOD you are at anything. You should always give someone a chance.RARR!#kendo#rudeness#old men#but the other two people were lovely :3
studentsoftheswordI want a new uniform, or more a new Hakama to be exact. My one is getting faded and its not the kind of material I really like. I would LOVE one of those heavier cotton ones that fall nicely into shape and just look legit. The darker the better.I have also been contemplating getting a new keikogi with my name in big orange letters down the side of the arm sleeve. Couple that with my dojo name written on the hard back bit of the hakama and some dojo logo or something and it would look awesome ;^;But I probably won't get it for a while yet. :I#kendo#uniform#wants#orange!2

studentsoftheswordWadokan Training 30/04/12Last night was amazing!!Its currently Golden Week here in Japan and yesterday was the official start of the week-long holiday, so there were only six people at the dojo, including the only sensei there, scary 8 dan sensei who is actually really nice and that's just the nickname I have for him.I started training with this other guy who I would peg as a 5 or 6 dan, and built like a gorilla. We did kihon waza and then launched into fighting which was really cool! I lately have really enjoyed fighting people who aren't sensei because I haven't been able to do it often, so that was nice :D He was strong and it took a lot of effort to keep up, so I got a lot out of it!Next fight was with the sensei, though we didn't actually fight. He just taught me a faster way of acquiring a men cut, which is definitely better. He had me work my butt off, scream my head of and run my body into the ground, but it was so worth it. He is fast becoming my favourite.Last fight I had was with a 6 dan (soon to be 7 dan next year /fingers crossed!!/) woman who I have only met once before and have never fought. I thought she was only like 2 or 3 dan, and just did kendo for fun, BUT NO. SHE IS LEGIT AWESOME. We had SO MUCH FUN FIGHTING, I cannot even explain. She was laughing, I was laughing, she was going bangbangbang with her shinai, as was I, and we went for ages! It was one of those fights when you are having too much fun to be tired! It was only a 30minute lesson last night, owing to the holiday, but I am already looking forward to Wednesday! And to top it off, the 6 dan lady, and this other 1st Kyu lady who is just adorable got my mobile number and email last night and they both texted me lovely messages saying how much fun they had with me and to have a good night T^TI love kendo! #kendo#Wadokan#kendokendokendo12

studentsoftheswordOh MY GOD. Did I just flick the channel on tv and catch the last 5 minutes of the Yokkaichi City (my city) high school kendo taikai? And did I just see one of my sensei in the commentary booth? WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING ALL MORNING WHILE THIS WAS ON?!?! /stealing dirt from the plot across the road to put in my new tomato plant pot/#kendo#stealing soil actually took all morning12

studentsoftheswordWadokan Training 27/04/12Ahh last night was good :D I stopped at a convenience store on the way an ran into another foreigner I have seen a few times, anyway we greeted each other and then I waited outside and we had a nice chat! Turns out she only lives up the road from me and there is a youth church group that always has fun so I might pop along to that some time ;) So anyway I got to the dojo (which was actually harder than normal because I crashed my bike in a carpark Thursday night and bruised my kneeeeeees :( total gaijin there....) Went upstairs and got changed, greeted everyone and went down again to start. One of the sensei gave me a flyer for his tea house ;_; and he's like 'here, English for you :D' But now I think I remember maybe leaving it there accidentally ... Training was gooood! I fought the younger, scarier 8 dan who never is scary with me and teaches me so many things it's not funny. I really enjoy fighting him. After him though I was so burnt out and thirsty that my throat was going back into sick mode so I dashes to the vending machines outside and bought a sports drink which worked a charm ^^ Second I fought the nice guy who always let's you know your points and pretty much died. After we fought he said the dreaded 'uchi-komi geiko' and then suddenly changed it to KAKARI GEIKO which I hate more and I swear I was so embarrassed at my lack of stamina that I have now added skipping to my daily exercise routine to improve it. It was horrible! Lastly, and very un expectedly as I pretty much gave up after the last fight and resigned myself to the wall of waiting for people to finish so the session can end (bear in mine here I still have a mild ear infection and have just recovered from my second cold in two weeks so my body wasn't all YEAH LET'S DO THIS as my mind was ;D) when suddenly the main 8 Dan sensei goes 'ALEX SAN ALEX SAN ALEX SAN' I look over and he's beckoning me to join him. I was like nooooooo!!!! As he is the king of uchi komi geiko lol and I was already tired. We did 5 boughts of it. FIVE. and I probably looked like a douche bag by the end, but I was utterly finished - completely exhausted. We finished and one of the women ran over and asked for my name and address for the competition~~~ registration~~~~~ ohh I'm so excited~~ I talked to the sensei who all had lovely constructive criticism for me, I love that. And I will work on it! And then I rode home!1

studentsoftheswordScary StoryOk so I was on the last of the trains I have to take home from work last night and there were 2 girls, no older than 15 sitting in front of me chatting away in Japanese lol. Not loud or obnoxious or anything, just usual teenage girl talk! I had my headphones in for most of the way, but when a song finished playing I heard this loud BANG!! from the front of the train. I took my headphones out cause I thought SHIT THE TRAIN IS CRASHING! but no, it was this crazy man up front banging his fist and leg against the wall talking crazy stuff and occasionally yelling at the two girls to shut up. As we neared our stop (I was quite vigilant now at this point) he kept turning around and screaming shit at them in Japanese, telling them to shut up and I don't know what else - but by this point the girls were not making a sound, they were scared of him and had stopped talking. The train stopped at the last stop, our station, and the girls quickly walked past me to the door behind me, I followed too but so did the crazy guy. As we were waiting for the doors to open he pushed past me and started yelling stuff again and stood behind them telling them crap like 'go die you runts!' - my rough translation- and then out of no where HE SLAPPED THEM BOTH ON THE SHOULDER AND PUSHED THEM. I immediately put my shoulder in between him and the girls. I am 170cm, and thanks to kendo I'm quite fit. I'm also not completely at my goal weight yet so I also have a bit of flab around my stomach and legs which gives me a bigger appearance lol! (He was probably about 180cm and 52 years old, had a hunch and was skinny. He was still big though, but I was already in kendo stance, and I was going to react if he touched them again. I didn't want a fight, I would have politely warned him (which he was crazy anyway so he would probably have become angry) but those girls were terrified of him after he hit them, and I was not going to let it go any further. Thankfully he didn't touch them again, when the doors open they made haste and walked quickly out, followed by me and another guy who I think was also ready to do something and then followed by the crazy man who was still yelling things like 'stupid f**king runts!' etc etc Nothing happened after that, which I'm so glad, but it gave me insight into my reaction of such a situation.12

studentsoftheswordANZAC DAYLest we forget. I could only be here in Japan, free as an Australian citizen because of their sacrifice. They fought, some younger than I am now, for their people, their country and its flag. We talk about fighting on tumblr here all the time, through martial arts and sports but none of it compares to being in war. Every country has its war history, today in Australia we honor ours. Thanks pop, may you R.I.P <3

studentsoftheswordCute Story #2So I ended up having to wait out the weekend with a bad middle ear infection as there were no doctors open and I wasn't gonna pay an ER fee so I endured it. I went to the nearest doctors clinic first thing this morning and had it checked out and got prescribed a 5 day course of antibiotics, however when I went across the road to the chemist, it was all together going to cost me about $70.00 (35$ for the observation and 35$ for the meds) and I had only brought 50$ with me as I am poor and was waiting for my salary lol T^TBut after I told the male pharmacist and his two cute assistants I didn't have enough with me they just giggled and wrote down how much it was on a sticky note, and put it in a bag with my antibiotics, gave it to me and told me to come back and pay for it when I had the money! I dunno about anywhere else in the world but that's pretty much unheard of in Australia. I was gobsmacked!Ended up spending the rest of the day fighting my company, got my salary and went back to the chemists where the girls were soooooo kind and paid them back!! Amazing people.--edit--EAR UNBLOCKED IN THE SHOWER!!!! FEELS LIKE HEAVEN!!!! #Japan#people#kind#ear infections suck#uughhh2
studentsoftheswordAs a result of my last cold I developed a nasty ear infection - seriously why? And bonus - no clinics or hospitals are available to see on a Sunday so I have to wait it out until tomorrow!! Hopefully I can still go to kendo tomorrow.11

studentsoftheswordWadokan Training 20/04/12Tonight was awesome!!I left early-ish to stop by a convenience store to pick up a packet of gum and ended buying a packet of mentos as well. All was well until about 5 minutes later when I decided to eat my gum. I opened the packet mid ride and suddenly they all FLEW OUT EVERYWHERE!! Like, I dropped about half the packet!!! But I wasn't gonna leave that delicious gum behind, so I went back and picked them up ;D (btw they were individually wrapped so they didn't actually touch the ground)5 minutes later I wanted to add a mentos to my delicious grape gum so I opened the mentos mid ride. AGAIN, THEY FLEW OUT OF THE PACKET and I lost like the entire lot minus two T^TDidn't go back for the mentos as obviously they touched the ground... \sob\30 minutes later I reached the dojo!! As soon as I entered one of the guys ran up to me and asked me if I would......JOIN THE WADOKAN TEAM FOR THE UPCOMING CITY TAIKAI!!!!!!I was stoked, like I was just nodding and smiling like an idiot haha, it felt pretty good :) He then went and asked the main sensei and the sensei called me to him. He said:'You wanna join the city taikai with our team? Ganbatte ne!! Go go go!!!'haha he was happy to have me on their team, so now I get to participate in the next competition with them in June!!!! :'D There weren't as many people present at the dojo tonight, but there were still all the sensei!! I got 5 fights tonight! 3 of them with the same sensei because I was determined to beat him haha, it didn't happen of course ;D He is an 8 dan lol. But he killed me in our final fight with the thing I hate most... uchi-komi geiko. UGH if anyone says that my body suddenly feels 10 kilos heavier and I want to cry lol. But I did it.I fought with (in my opinion) the strongest of the sensei there, but hes not there all the time. He's pretty tough too, like he pushes you around and shoulder barges you and never lets you stop until you are fully done. But he was good, and he laughed a few times so I felt easier about him. I don't know his dan level but hes probably 7, maybe 8 - I don't know. I also fought a woman who I think is probably about ikkyu level and she was tank!! After our fight she must have had a go at each sensei at least once, and maybe some twice!! I need more stamina, although tonight I trained hard. Also I made a friend!!! Applause!!! Finally!!! He is super super super strong, and probably only about 19\20? I asked him if the younger people of the dojo ever get together and have ramen or go to a restaurant etc etc and he said not really but we can! Him and his mum(I think) waited for me outside at the end and we exchanged phone numbers so hopefully we can organise a little social session with everybody! I would really like that :)But yay! Finally part of the team :) #kendo#wadokan#training#made the team!!!#woooo!11
