Middenmeer Aerodrome (Dutch: Vliegveld Middenmeer) is a small airfield in the town of Middenmeer, Netherlands. It is located southeast of Den Helder.
History
[edit]The airstrip was established in 1934.[1]
Military airfield
[edit]During the beginning of the Second World War, the Hilversum Airfield was attacked by the Germans on 10 May 1940. As a result the first reconnaissance group of the second aviation regiment of the Royal Netherlands Air Force that was stationed there, consisting of five Fokker C.V, four Koolhoven F.K.51 and a Fokker C.X, was transferred to this airfield.[2] They were used for bombing and reconnaissance missions against the German military.[3][4] The south-west corner of the current airfield touches the north-east corner of the former military airfield.[5] The airfield was from the air not easily visible.[3]
In 1975, the airfield already disestablished at the time, there were plans to build an ammunition depot at the site of this former airfield, for which the municipality raised strong objections.[6][7]
New airfield
[edit]On Ascension Day in 2003, a new airfield was opened. Only one month later, the airfield was closed again by court order after a local resident complained that the local government had not properly followed procedures when issuing the permits. After two years of legal proceedings, the Council of State ruled in 2005 that all objections against the granted permit were unfounded, allowing the airport to reopen for a maximum period of five years. In 2014, a permanent permit was granted.[8][9]
As of 2012, the airfield has a single grass runway, 05/23, 600 metres (1,968 feet) long. It is used exclusively by ultralight aviation, the short grass runway not being able to support heavier aircraft. A flight school is located on the airfield. An open day is organized annually.[10] Since 14 October 2022, Middenmeer Airfield has been open to aircraft with an MTOW of 890 kg.[11]
