Alessio Zanelli is an Italian poet who writes in English.[1] His work has appeared in literary magazines in several countries, and The Poetry Society describes him as an Italian writer in English whose poems have appeared in more than 250 journals from 20 countries.[2]
Life and work
[edit]Zanelli was born in Cremona, Italy.[3] He writes poetry in English rather than Italian, his native language.[3] World Literature Today has described him as Italian by birth and as a writer who adopted English as his writing language.[4]
His poems have appeared in publications including World Literature Today, California Quarterly, Chiron Review, Concho River Review, Italian Americana, The Lyric, Main Street Rag, Poesia and Potomac Review.[4] His poem "The Castaway" was published by World Literature Today in 2011.[4] His poem "The Finite Prairies Under Boundless Skies" was published by the Society of Classical Poets in 2018.[5]
His books include six poetry collections, two bilingual selections and a chapbook.[2] His sixth collection, The Invisible, was published by Greenwich Exchange in 2024.[2]
Zanelli has also been associated with The Poetry Society's international Stanza network; the society lists a Cremona and online Italy Stanza among its international groups.[6]
Critical reception
[edit]Zanelli's poetry has received attention in literary and poetry-review publications. Reviewing The Secret of Archery for the Society of Classical Poets, James Sale described Zanelli as technically accomplished, especially in his formal poems, while also offering a mixed assessment of the collection's free verse and emotional distance.[7] Lynn Woollacott, reviewing the same collection for Amethyst Review, discussed the book's use of landscape, memory, running, mortality and reflective imagery.[8]
His chapbook Amalgam was reviewed by Allen Ashley for the British Science Fiction Association, who noted its range of previously published poems, its shaped-poem techniques and its mixture of speculative, historical and contemporary references.[9] The Invisible was reviewed in London Grip Poetry Review in 2024.[10]
