Should voice recording people without their consent be legal?

submitted by Artemis to Polls 3 daysMay 23, 2026 17:01:07 ago (+3/-2)     (Polls)

Some countries have laws against recording peoples' voices without their consent. I think that's moralfag nonsense. Voice recordings can provide evidence of badly behaving people such as teachers (example), people making threats over telephone, and exposes con artists like DuhPhxnk, who deserve public humiliation.

It also preserves life memories with beloved people.

After voting, optionally explain your reasoning.

Because lying liars and assorted backstabbers are never going to give consent for anything that exposes their con.

Indeed. Like I said, one-way surveillance.

Illegal, unless it's used to prove malpractice or scamming.
This is often in the case in many countries I guess.

In places where it is illegal, someone can make threats against you or try to scam you over telephone but you have "violated their privacy" if you record it.

At the same time, the state can freely wiretap its citizens (source). It seems to be about one-way surveillance.

Depending in what state your in it is. In my state as long as 1 of the parties is aware the call is recorded it's legal.

Lawyers, (real) clergy, and spousal units is a murky area. And beofe I get my shit jumped, those 3 in the strictest of terms. No online degrees from McNabs' Law School and Seminary. Dating for a year isn't a spouse.

The entire country of Canada is "single party consent".

As long as one party (you, presumably) is aware the recording is taking place, it is legal, and can be used as evidence in a court of law.

Several countries, as well as several of the jewnited states also have single party consent.

It always legal to record if you have informed the other party.

It is always illegal to record a conversation that you are not a part of (3rd party), which is why many (street facing) cctv systems do not have sound.

Private property is a somewhat different matter. It is legal in all cases to record the inside of your own home, so long as you are not violating a law by doing so. IE recording your living room, not a crime. recording your bathroom, possibly a crime.
