Drolta Tzuentes (ドロテア・ツェンテス Dorotea Tsentesu?, lit. "Dorottya Szentes") is a mentioned character in Castlevania: Bloodlines. She is a mysterious old witch and servant of Elizabeth Bartley who used dark magic to bring her mistress back to life.

History[]

Japanese version[]

Some time before 1917, Drolta used black magic to bring Elizabeth Bartley, Count Dracula's niece, back to life. The two then set in motion a plot to resurrect the Dark Lord. Drolta used her magic to animate a powerful suit of armor in an attempt to waylay Belmont descendant, John Morris, and his friend, Eric Lecarde.

American version[]

The American Castlevania: Bloodlines instruction booklet instead states that Drolta was an "amateur witch" who "casts a spell which inadvertently brings Elizabeth Bartley back to life".

A loose incarnation of Drolta appears in the Netflix original series Castlevania: Nocturne. Unlike the original character, who had a more subtle involvement in the story, this Drolta plays a much prominent role and her presence is pivotal to the story's narrative. Drolta is now a very powerful vampire who takes advantage of the social conflicts that have risen during times of the French Revolution to clear the path for the coming of the "Vampire Messiah", Countess Erzsebet Báthory (in this aspect, she shares some traits with the original Elizabeth Bartley, who traveled Europe with the final goal to resurrect Count Dracula). Drolta is a black vampire who thrives on her sadism and complete disdain to other people's lives. All that is known about her past is that she was a priestess of the ancient Egyptian goddess of war Sekhmet, which hints at her possibly having lived for thousands of years.

Trivia[]

  • Drolta is based on Dorottya Szentes (Dorotya Semtész), one of Erzsébet Báthory's servants who was one of three people said to have been tried, convicted and executed as accomplices to the crimes committed by the "Blood Countess".
    • This connection was also discussed in an internal fax to Electronic Gaming Monthly, although a notable difference between the historical and game characters was that the latter was not simply an accomplice in the murders, but also directly responsible for planting the idea into Elizabeth Bartley's head beforehand.
  • It has been speculated that Dracula's second form in Castlevania: Bloodlines could be Drolta. This rumor mainly stems from the similarities between the in-game sprite and the character's artwork that appears in the Japanese instruction booklet for the game, being a frail-looking humanoid cloaked under a blue robe, and also holding what appears to be a wand, an item often associated with magic practitioners. Some of these speculations include:
    • Drolta fighting the heroes after Dracula's first phase to give him time to gather enough power to transform into the demon that is fought as the final boss.
    • Drolta's body being used as a vessel for Dracula to resurrect into (like Isaac's body was in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness).
However, no official statement has ever been released to confirm any of these, and the canon version is that the cloaked figure is just a second form Dracula adopts during the fight. Further supporting this, is that Dracula can be seen actually transforming into this second form during the fight, without any other character replacing him during this transition.
  • According to Beep! MegaDrive, Drolta might have been an alternate form of Death, explaining her supposed absence from the game.[1]
