In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Koopa Troopas are explicitly religious, which is very rare for the Mario franchise. This might be a reference to an idea first proposed by Super Mario Bros. 3 32 years prior, whereby a Koopa Troopa was shown praying in the game's ending.

I'm so dumb, I always thought the Koopa was looking at the statue going "Hmmmm something is off about this statue"
I always interpreted that koopa as scratching its chin being suspicious of the mario statue
Outta the way paratroopas 🐢🪽
Make way for the prayerkoopas 🐢🙏
With Mario being Italian, you'd expect him to be Catholic. I guess he's just exploring rn. 😅
This has major implications on the lore...
Is Bowser the leader of a church of Koppa?
Are all Mario enemies part of this church of Koppa? Probably not any of the ghost or Shy-Guy's. But still!!
This must be what MatPat feels like when new FNAF media comes out...
Would make sense why they all follow Bowser with such intense loyalty
Hmm there are jizo statues (iirc) in bowsers kingdom in super mario odyssey, do those have any religious significance?
Huh I always thought the koopa troopa was scratching his chin trying to figure out if it’s Mario or not
Honestly thought he was all like, "Mario is gone and now there's this statue. HMMMM."
SMB3 Koopa stood on their hind legs be kinda adorable though
Haven't played Origami King yet; Koopa Troopas are religious in that game?
Yes; they apparently worship the turtle-like Earth Vellumental and talk about "shellvation"
I always thought the Koopa at the end of Super Mario Bros. 3 was a female Koopa (due to its pink shell) who thought Statue Mario is cute and she is acting coy/shy around him, or giggling.
Was I the only one that thought that???
TIL what the Koopa was doing in that SMB3 picture
