Need help with mods.

Hi all, relatively new to Homeworld Remastered. I'm currently trying to install the Mass Effect Reborn mod onto my steam based version of Homeworld Remastered to no avail, any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks!

Is this the Mass Effect: Reborn mod from ModDB? Never tried it but there's a txt file with instructions inside the zip file

1. Put either the files into your Homeworld2Classic/Data or HomeworldRM/Data folder depending on which version you want to play. Remastered files go into HomeworldRM/Data, Classic files in Homeworld2Classic/Data.
2. Make a shortcut of Homeworld2.exe or HomeworldRM.exe, depending on which version you play.
3. Add -overrideBigFile at the end.
4. Start the mod.

So a step by step guide would be:

Go on Steam, right click HW Remastered, Manage, Browse Local Files, open HomeworldRM folder (for the remastered version), open Data folder, extract the Mass Effect mod files here (ai, art, background, etc....), go back to the HomeworldRM folder, open bin folder, open release folder, right click HomeworldRM.exe and create shortcut on desktop, right click shortcut and click properties, go to shortcut tab and add -overrideBigFile in the "Target" box at the end of what is already there (do not remove what is already there, just add a space and then -overrideBigFile at the end), click ok, run game via shortcut

Removing the mod would mean manually removing any files added, or the lazy way is delete the game and redownload via steam

Thank you for taking the time to explain but I must be doing something catastrophicly wrong, followed your guide step by step but when I use the newly created shortcut with the target line edited it just opens normal vanilla Homeworld 😭

Weird, let's try something else

Right click on Homeworld Remastered on Steam, Properties, General, in the "Launch Options", add the following:

-mpbeta -dlccampaign HW2Campaign.big -moddatapath MER -moviepath DataHW2Campaign -overrideBigfile

Close the Properties window and then right click -> properties again to check the launch options added are still there, close when done

MPBeta allows multiplayer if disabled for some reason, DLCCampaign chooses which Homeworld game to launch (HW1 or HW2), ModDataPath is the directory we're gonna put the Mass Effect mods into, MoviePath for the cut scenes to load (HW1 or HW2), OverrideBigFile allows the game to use loose files not in a .big container

Go to the HomeworldRM folder, create a new folder called "MER" (Mass Effect Reborn), go into MER and paste the mod files here (ai, art, etc), run the game via Steam and select Homeworld 2 Remastered

If that doesn't work, then it may mean the mod has to be in a .big file to work or I'm missing something that I don't even know about. Mods can be packed into .big files when uploaded to the workshop or it means getting creative and using old software from back in the day. Using a .big file would allow the use of a different command line -mod to direct the game to load the .big file and everything inside it (example, -mod MassEffect.big)

This is about as far as my knowledge goes, I haven't done modding for a long time now so hopefully this will work

Edit: Tried it myself, Multiplayer has Mass Effect ships, Single player gives me an "access violation" error and crashes (I'm on Linux so that may be to do with it), Extra Missions has a Mass Effect mission

Did you ever get it to work?
