Addenum to my @LAS talk!

I don't think people realized that next basically fixes everything. Browsers will use their own sandboxes, steam, password managers, etc.

And a new VPN portal. All of the razorburn goes away.

All we need to do is gather a bunch of nerds.

I would like too amend my statement: "The gamer kids and the rust kids will save Linux, and the ops people will help them succeed."

@jorge@hachyderm.io @LAS@floss.social

I see the slides in the talk make repeated mention of creating systemd services. What does this mean for distros that use flatpak but don't have systemd?

@2something @LAS I don't know, ask them?

@jorge@hachyderm.io @LAS@floss.social

I'm asking for clarification: Will Flatpak Next/Flatpak 2 depend on systemd?

@2something @LAS Are you serious? Of course.

@jorge @2something @LAS yeah soo uhh that's going out the window apparently? yknow the biggest feature of flatpak
@2something @jorge @LAS snark apart, what is the point of depending on systemd, if the point of flatpak is to work across different distros and environments? why would flatpak depend on systemd now, even though it's worked just fine without it all this time? /genq

@hazel @2something @LAS Because it doesn't matter. What problem are you reying to solve? This is a solved problem and is best practice everywhere.

And if you don't use it why do you care?

@jorge @2something @LAS i care because i do use flatpak (granted im currently running systemd, but im working on changing that sooner than later).
does the fact that a bunch of distros that flatpak officially supports will be dropped in the future not matter though?

i believe that choice is good. saying that alternatives dont matter because most people use systemd is the same thing as saying that people shouldnt try linux because most people use windows or macos. just because something is used by most people doesnt make it The Only Choice any reasonable person should pick.

I'm genuinely trying to find why it's been chosen to have a requirement on systemd. what does it bring to flatpak?

@hazel @2something @LAS Who says anything about being dropped? What are you on about.

Who is saying that this is a requirement? Do you have a link?

this page
flatpak.org/setup/ lists a bunch of distros. some of them straight up dont support systemd. by depending on systemd, flatpak would cease working on these distros, correct?

@hazel @2something @LAS

Right. Everyone knows this already. We're talking about modern linux desktops - the audience is the LAS audience. I'm not talking to you.

@jorge i mean sorry but like, what constitutes as a "modern linux desktop" for you? there are extremely modern distros that dont use systemd, as well as systemd distros which lag behind by a lot. that argument straight up makes no sense.

also, i dont know what even is the point about the audience. the context of the discussion was completely changed by 2something, we might as well talk on another thread. we can talk through dms, although i doubt it'd be very productive given our exchanges so far.

@hazel None of your argument makes sense to me. Is it so hard to understand that people prefer to use linux without being bothered by people like you? Why do you care.

It's my computer. Do what you want to your computer.
