Kickstarter Backtracks on Mature Content Censorship, Claims Payment Processor Pressured Them

Kickstarter has officially reversed its controversial new mature content guidelines after massive backlash from creators, artists, and users who accused the platform of effectively declaring war on adult-oriented content.

In a new statement, Kickstarter COO Sean Leow acknowledged that the recently introduced rules created: “More confusion, more uncertainty, and real fear” among creators who felt Kickstarter was abandoning the creative freedom the platform had long been associated with.

Kickstarter confirmed it is now fully reverting back to its previous guidelines, which simply prohibit pornography and illegal content rather than aggressively policing vague sexual themes.

Most notably, Kickstarter outright admitted the policy changes were primarily driven by pressure from payment processor Stripe:

“The updates to the rules were primarily driven by requirements from our payments processor, Stripe. Stripe operates under its own legal and compliance requirements separate from Kickstarter’s own rules. And even Stripe’s rules are dictated by a larger system shaped by financial institutions that govern how money moves globally. Under this system, many platforms – including other crowdfunding and creator monetization platforms – struggle with how to create space for mature content while getting the creators of that work paid without friction.”

Kickstarter explained that Stripe had increasingly begun suspending campaigns — sometimes while they were actively funding — even after Kickstarter itself had already approved them.

The company claimed it attempted to defend creators directly with Stripe in multiple cases, sometimes successfully reversing enforcement actions. However, Kickstarter ultimately tried to align its own rules with Stripe’s demands to avoid creators getting caught between two different standards.

The platform now admits that decision backfired badly. In perhaps the most surprising part of the apology, Kickstarter stated: “The decision we made was an abandonment of the core counterculture, f*ck the establishment spirit of Kickstarter.”

The controversy exploded because the previous guidelines were viewed by many creators as absurdly restrictive and internally contradictory. Kickstarter simultaneously claimed to support “creative expression” while banning huge categories of sexualized artwork and imagery, even while allowing some “spicy” romance content under highly specific conditions.

Kickstarter has now reverted to its older ruleset, but the company warns creators that Stripe can still suspend projects regardless of Kickstarter approval.
