Upvote if you have no idea what OP is talking about and google didn’t give answers.

I clicked to his profile, and the similar post on /r/occult just leaves me with more questions.

everything about it was compelling! the color grading, that medium shot, and the tropicalia (i’m guessing it’s ‘os mutantes’) music! not to mention the performance! i’m following!!!

Dang, thanks for bringing back Os mutantes for me.

It seems like this post pulls phrases from a lot of posts over the past few weeks in the sub and mashed then together, so I think you're right.

It's like r/subredditsimulator but more coherent.

        [–]shanoww 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Makes more sense now why it doesn’t make sense. Thank you!

If you split the pole in the center of the mirror labyrinth at city park and wait a fair amount of time for the talking nutria, he'll lead you through the Monk Runs to the old baker on his way, but don't dawdle because he's late to the white rabbit's fais do do

[–]nolainacat lady also opossums 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Does this work on the one by the riverwalk?

        [–]Me_at_Night_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Of course not, the Monk Runs and the Mome Raths do not cross paths and there'd be a frightful amount of water bouncing into itself anyway. There is the possibility of flipping one's vehicle at a singular angle while rotating at exactly quadruple the pace of the Montelone carousel, which, once landed, should put you into the up-side view of land creatures such as ducks (who have the most to gain out of using their boring legs) to run along to the old baker and the inevitable moment.

For funsies, I did an exact term search for “old baker moment” on Google and this is the first instance of that phrase ever being written on the internet

Google is such a Johnny-come-lately. You have to at least go back to Netscape, or better, do an archie search from command line. You’d be shocked and also enlightened.

        [–]SchrodingersMinouBywater 233 points234 points  (15 children)

You're right. This city is full of transplants who like to talk a big game like they know the old baker moment, posting on Instagram like they really went through without a guide, but they're full of shit. Oh, you think you can get through the Monk Runs without a map? Prove it. Bring back a candle from the shrine at the Squire's Fountain, you piece of shit.

        [–]Madamexxxtra 134 points135 points  (11 children)

The people who move here because they fell in love with the idea of the old baker moment are the same people who realize how impossible it is to navigate the Monk Runs and leave after a few years.

        [–]SchrodingersMinouBywater 90 points91 points  (10 children)

Or else they find out can't pay the toll at the Hart's Tree on a barista's income, and they're not able to take on an apprenticeship with a clockmaker and work off the entry fee. I really wish that people would just STOP PRETENDING that completing the Monk Runs is an realistic goal for people who don't have 1. generational wealth or 2. the manual dexterity to craft their own astrolabe. It creates unattainable expectations and just inspires more dipshits to move down here, get lost in the Barrens, and need to be rescued. If this city would invest in jobs that pay more people a living wage, it would be a different story, but the situation as it is just puts more people in danger trying to take shortcuts around the Tree.

        [–]Madamexxxtra 42 points43 points  (6 children)

Then they complain that they pay taxes and the city should provide astrolabes! They’ll scoff that the police took four hours to find them in the Barrens!

But anyone who has any real experience with clockmaking knows that’s just not how this city operates.

        [–]SchrodingersMinouBywater 51 points52 points  (2 children)

Yeah, what's next, you want the city to repair collapsing Portals? Monitor the water quality in the Wellsprings? Fat chance as long as there's a chance for the city government to apply for grants and then "lose" the funding. This isn't Portland, okay? This is the Dirty South and transplants need to stop expecting the city, AND the old baker moment, to conform to whatever standards or expectations they formed somewhere else. Respect the culture, and you'll understand. Study Benneteau's parallel commentary on the old baker moment. Watch Baller Blockin'. Listen to your elders. Talk to your neighbors (and NOT on Nextdoor).

I mean it's the entitlement and the lack of respect that really gets me. Yeah, the city has problems, but that doesn't mean that we need some dickwad from L.A. to come mansplain how to make gluten-free satsuma mead while we're trying to concentrate on unlocking one of the Onyx Gates. Sorry, speaking from personal experience on that one.

        [–]Madamexxxtra 40 points41 points  (1 child)

As if the best gluten-free satsuma mead recipes aren’t from your grandmother or your neighbor’s boyfriend’s auntie. Did you see the NYT article claiming to only way to make it authentically was to add chicory? Cher, no.

        [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

        Oh my god

        [–]VisforVenom 43 points44 points  (2 children)

Damn transplants can't even handle jumping water right-side up. Expecting to just navigate the monk runs on their first old baker moment, with laughing water upside down. Pfft. Ridiculous.

        [–]SchrodingersMinouBywater 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Right? One old baker moment is a JOKE. Not to mention the new baker moment. Listen, if the new baker moment imbued you with enough understanding to complete a Run, then everyone would be doing it. Hello??!? The new baker moment is just a marketing scheme developed by mapbrokers anyway-- just a total scam. Their customers probably think they get high off candy from the Weed World trucks, too. Just a bunch of pathetic amateurs.

        [–]VisforVenom 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Same types that think they're locals for discovering Frenchmen st. 300 years people been giving their all to get that oak tree to hand over the light... Y'all make one roux without burning it and suddenly you're Jean Lafitte. Just gonna waltz the Runs like a stroll through Marigny Mines and pop up on the West Bank lantern in hand to hang on your porch. Upside down or not it takes a few more bloody swollen folds to prep yourself for that yogurt cup.

        [–]goldenspiral8 28 points29 points  (2 children)

This is true, it hasn't been the same since the formation of the S&WB (Singularity & Wormhole Board) at this point they have created so many alternate timelines it's impossible to prevent a collapse. At the beginning of the Monk runs no one knew the divergence it would cause and look at what that has gotten us. Rest in peace old Baker if only you could see what you've done and how they have twisted your theories to suit this modern "Monk Run"

This x 1,000. Everyone wants to talk a big game until you ask for a candle from the shrine at Squire’s Fountain. Or a bell from the cap at Jester’s Court……or People’s Court for that matter. Judge Joseph Wapner is rolling in his grave right now. Cowards!

You need a totem to take with you while roaming The Monk Runs to freshen your understanding of the old baker moment. I prepared mine by gathering mardi gras gutter fluid from several years in a small vial. In The Runs I would dose a piece of leidenheimer bread with it and raise it to my nose/mouth and drink deeply of it's scent. Works best with a bloody nose.

OP figured out the name of the old underwater submarine racetrack. Haven't heard anyone even refer to that in years. Straight off West End is correct though.

On a side note, I hope they finally finish developing that whole area. Lots of good memories of the old bars and seafood restaurants that used to be.

As far as the culture, there's only one culture in New Orleans. Like Tennessee Williams said, there's only 3 cities in America, and we're currently under siege by Cleveland on all fronts.

(Except the lakeside, cuz we all know there ain't nothin that way but crabs and white flight.)

Wait, I know about "submarine races" and the old "new Orleans coney Island" schtick the west end used to have, but how does "old Baker moment" tie in? Is it a misspelling of monument for one of the plaques out there for all the bygone "ain't Dere no more" businesses from back in that day?

Many classic baker moments went down at the old Bali Ha'i, you might try looking there

I figured out the Monk Runs but not the baker moment.

now THIS is interesting… it seems like at first he was just having a laugh but upon review I think he’s really touched upon a truth regarding the old baker moment in the city. It’s kind of like how the field turns in the autumn or how Monk Runs simply may not traversed without a greater understanding of the said baker moment. almost enlightment but not quite. almost fallow but I’ll bite… now THIS is interesting.

I hope you’re taking notes, young ones

and drop an upvote if this made you smile :-)

What OP is asking is how the Old Baker Moment relates to the Monk Run. The only way to get an invitation to particapate in the Monk Run is by finding the monastery and prepare a meal for the monks. The Old Baker Moment got its name because of the first person to go on this quest only had with him the ingredients for biscuits. When he finally found the monastery he was left with little to no supplies as he had to consume most of the things he brought on the journey. Lucky for him one of the portals took him into a swamp where he was able to survive on nutria rat until he could correct his calculations and get back on the right path. Anyway, when he finally discovered the monastery he had aged 20 years and was almost incoherent from exhaustion. The monks offered him a place to stay on the condition that he prepare a meal, with what he had with him, and share it with the monks. Lard, flour, and a few packets of sugar and salt, was all that was left of his supplies. He baked for them the most amazing biscuits they had ever tasted. They invited him to stay and join the monk run. Now everyone thinks they are the Old Baker and it is going to be their moment.
