Japanese Embassy in Indonesia Warns Against Sexual Exploitation of Children After Confirming Japanese-Language Posts About Act

JAKARTA – The Japanese Embassy in Indonesia is urging Japanese travelers and residents to comply with the law after confirming Japanese-language posts on social media alluding to the sexual exploitation of children in Indonesia.

The embassy issued a statement Wednesday warning that such acts are subject to enforcement locally and that offenders will also be punished in Japan upon return under Japanese law, which prohibits the sexual exploitation of children and child pornography.

A series of Japanese-language posts have appeared on social media claiming that individuals engaged in sexual acts with persons under the age of 18 in the capital Jakarta and the nearby city of Bekasi, knowing they were underage.

Jakarta police authorities told The Yomiuri Shimbun that “the cybercrime unit and other agencies are investigating” the situation.
