The Mayo Clinic is benefiting from a new wave in medical tourism โ increasingly wealthy Chinese patients coming to the United States to seek treatment for serious medical conditions.
The Wall Street Journal, in a broader report on the trend, said that the Rochester, Minn.-based hospital has seen its number of Chinese patients more than double over the past year. An official said that China represents the area "where we see the greatest growth right now," though he didn't provide figures. (The number is still likely pretty small, though; a report in Caixin Online earlier this year said the number of patients increased from 50 to 200 over the past five years.)
To accommodate the new patients, the Mayo Clinic has added on-staff interpreters and a Web page in Chinese.
The Caixin Online report also noted that Mayo signed a deal with Beijing Saint Lucia Consulting Co. to help Chinese patients get access to the hospital.
