I-2: IF THERE WERE NO THUNDER is the second level of Indulgence and Act III, which introduces the Neutralizer as a common enemy and the
Datascraper as an environmental setpiece.
The music used in this level is Screaming In Space for the starting area, Where No One Can Hear for the level's remainder once the player heads outside, and Anemoia for the secret area
Level Areas
Intro
A vast, underground complex filled with a light-green fog. It contains pipes, streams of running water, vents (some of which can be entered), catwalks, and various other features commonly present in sewers. The complex has lower gravity than usual, allowing the player to leap across huge gaps.
Near the end of the segment, a skeleton can be found next to writing on the wall reading "CAN ANYONE HEAR ME NOW?".
WAVES:
Plaza
After stepping onto a vent, the player is launched upward and bursts out of a sewer grate, entering the plaza. It contains buildings arranged in a rectangular shape, and a Datascraper looming overhead. The enemies here have in-fighting enabled.
In the second wave, the Cerberus can be killed quickly by using an electric shock from the jumpstart nailgun or electric railcannon on a nearby car, causing it to explode.

Maisonette
After entering the maisonette, a single Mannequin will dash up from the cellar and attack you, likely sending you into cardiac arrest.
Entering the cellar, you will find a portrait of The Hand of the King, and a book reading as follows:
TEXT SCANNED - EXCERPT: THE NIGHT OF THE BLOODY RIOTS
"...But one day, we saw him. The head of Tantalus' ministry, The Hand of the King, staring into the vastness of the black hole that dominates our sky. Swirling, perfect blackness. He gripped his weapon tightly, and descended to the people.
He overlooked the mass crowd of men and women. Wailing. Screaming for answers. Screaming for help, for the freedom we were promised. How many years have we been here? Nonetheless, it drove us mad. His holy lance trembled in his hands as he spoke few words. Was it hesitance? Unease?
'Bleed.' he ordained to all."
REMAINING TEXT: IRRELEVANT.
WAVES:
Power Station Street
A narrow street with a car parked at one end and a power station at the other. The power station contains another car that can be blown up using an electric shock.
WAVES:
Turbine Network
An underground sewer system containing many turbines. Some are active, and will hurt you if touched, while others a non-functional and can be passed through. At the end of this segment, entering a small hole in the ground, you will find a blue skull pedestal. If you brought the blue skull with you, placing it on the pedestal will open a grate leading to a hidden room.

Crawlspace House
Entering a small hole at the end of the flood canal will lead into a basement, where the player enters into a house through the floorboards. This house contains the red skull and leads back into the courtyard.
Datascraper Courtyard
A large area surrounded by buildings, with an elevated platform in the centre which the Hideous Mass sits upon. A
Datascraper looms overhead. The
Idol is contained inside a box and can only be accessed once all enemies (excluding the
Hideous Mass) are killed. Once the
Hideous Mass is killed, it fires a mortar into the Datascraper above, killing it

Challenge
For the level's challenge, the player simply has to jump onto the roof of the power station. On it is a makeshift table and a car radio. Next to the radio is a book which reads:
TEXT SCANNED - UNIQUE PASSAGE:
"Hello! If you're reading this you must have stumbled upon one of my Datascraper Signal Scanners! (patent pending)
This will allow you to listen to the signals picked up by the areas local Datascraper unit without having to put in much legwork yourself.
Simply provide an electric shock to the car radio I've hooked up to this building's transmission tower, and it should pick up whatever the nearest Datascraper is currently hearing! Please enjoy! I've left a tip jar too incase you'd like to fund my future endeavours. (Please don't steal it...)"
Doing as the book reads and shocking the radio with the jumpstart nailgun or the electric railcannon will cause it to play 1 of 19 different recordings, completing the challenge

Easter Eggs
- There are several Gourmands from Rain World (colloquially known as fat fuck) outside the first room of this level.
- There is a cube with Slink's face that plays the Funkytown song on the left-side building's roof when you jump up from the vents. This is only accessible via the noclip cheat.
- After the arena with a Gutterman and 2 Strays, if you instead noclip through the closed gate on the left side, turn around and look up, there is a GIF of Matikanetannhauser from Umamusume: Pretty Derby repeatedly throwing bricks at you.
- If the blue skull is placed atop the headless skeleton in the Red Soul Orb room, it will display the following text: Nothing happens, but perhaps Hank's bloodline will have a chance at continuing with a good head on his shoulders.
This is so far the first and only instance of Hank in Project Purgatorio
Trivia
- The title of the level is a reference to a quote by Jules Verne: "If there were no thunder, men would have little fear of lightning." from the book "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas"
- The blue exploding cars are named "Tesla Cybertruck" internally, which is a direct reference to the 2025 Las Vegas Cybertruck explosion outside of Trump Tower, and the Tesla Cybertruck's general tendency to not work.
- I-2 had 4 entirely unique iterations before the one that made it to the release build and took about a year of development to finalise, making it the longest development cycle of a released Purgatorio level currently.
- Despite this, it still has less iterations than the main theme "WHERE NO ONE CAN HEAR", which had 5.
- The rooms "A2 - Tract" and "A4 - Wall" from the intro sequence have sometimes entirely crashed players' computers due to the particles.
- The writing "CAN ANYONE HEAR ME NOW?" is a reference to For Everest (Winds Wept) from Dispirited Spirits' 2025 album Winds Wept
- The maisonette featuring a lone mannequin is a reference to a building found in Gloomwood's market district. [1]
- Leaning up to one of the various locked doors one can hear vigorous coughing, generously provided by Distantland.
- The ladder room is a reference to the ladder room in Metal Gear Solid 3 [3]
