The month of May comes with a packed calendar: the Eurovision Song Contest, the Met Gala and not one but two bank holiday weekends primed for hours spent huddled around a heater in a pub garden. This year, there’s another date to add to the diary: the much-anticipated The Devil Wears Prada sequel, landing on 1 May and neatly coinciding with the theatrical goings-on of this year’s Fashion Is Art-themed first Monday in May.
Since the follow-up was announced last year, we’ve been drip-fed a steady stream of clips: Andy stomping around in questionable tailoring while wielding a Coach bag; Miranda looking increasingly confused in an increasingly confusing wardrobe of personality jackets and Emily… well, the less said, the better. Let’s just keep those mid-aughts Patricia Field moodboards in mind when the logomania gets a bit too much.
Simone Ashley is a recent addition to the Runway universe. In the latest trailer, we see her grapple with the concept of disposable Chanel, while making a compelling case for best-dressed employee of the month. In a pleated skirt (with shades of Thom Browne or American Apparel, depending on how you look at it), a checked shirt and the neckwear acting equivalent of a useless belt, this fashion assistant reminds us of the dwindling art of dressing up for the office.

Although these days, real-life experience suggests fashion assistants are more into sensible jumpers and flat shoes, thanks to Simone Ashley, the dream is still alive.
