I miss the days when, no matter how slow your internet was, if you paused any video and let it buffer long enough, you could watch it uninterrupted
If you use Firefox, you can go to the about:config page, search for "media.mediasource.enabled" and double click on it to set it to false. After you restart Firefox, all youtube videos will load entirely even when paused! This also affects other streaming websites :)
There's more to do actually, now
go to About:config find media.mediasource.enabled and toggle it to false find media.cache_readahead_limit and change it to 9999 find media.cache_resume_threshold and change it to 9999
additionally if you'd prefer mp4 to webm
also in about:config, find: media.encoder.webm.enabled media.mediasource.webm.audio.enabled media.mediasource.webm.enabled media.webm.enabled and toggle them all to false
note! this will limit video to 1080p
and use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dont-accept-webp/ to kill WebP Fuck Google
We jailbreaking browsers now lmao
Yeah why doesn’t that work anymore?
bandwidth
@luxdraconia Video streaming consumes an ungodly amount of energy
@bean-bean-bean-machine so websites can save money on bandwidth
i would set up youtube for a video we wanted to watch first thing in the morning and it would be loaded after dinner 😪
My mom used to have YouTube time limits set up so I would load a bunch of videos to watch
yes
get ublock origin, it blocks all youtube ads and ads on pretty much any website. only works on desktop but still, it's made life so much easier
or brave browser for your phone.
Down loading multiple tabs of Disney songs in languages I wanted to learn over night
WAIT does it not work like that anymore??!? Have I need wasting SO much time??
@tumblerislovetumblerislife Only on desktop? Firefox and Firefox-Based bowsers like Mull are available on Android and can all get this Ublock Origins on those, it also works with YouTube. If you don't like watching youtube in your browser, there's also NewPipe to block the adds, tho it doesn't let you log into your account.
when we didn’t have internet, my mom’s friend would go out to places with free wifi and load up pirated movies so we could watch them on his laptop
i remember watching the little grey and red bars race each other checking how many bars i had as i watched anxiously to see if the grey would pull ahead... often it was more riveting than the videos. i feel so bad for kids watching youtube these days deprived of knowing the epic highs and lows of youtube video buffering
I can't watch an uninterrupted video even now days if I leave it tu buffer bc Venezuela y'know
you can’t do this anymore???
@gaydux actually its to prevent easy downloading of the video, if a video fully buffers its encoded on your computer as a full playable video file, what youtube and a ton of other streamers do is send the video in smaller segments then splice them to prevent this, this is why even with ads removed buffer times still operate weird because many websites are programmed to stop after a certain amount forward as if the ads are still there
@clottedscream not with ads no
@tribbleenchantress nah downloading is still pretty easy with python scripts. The limited buffering is mostly to save data if the video is paused and maybe the user won't continue watching or will continue only after a while.
@dilong-paradoxus well yeah with scripts its still easy, but with alot of players you used to be able to just use an inspect element on the video playing to get the full video download, the two things websites did to stop that kind of downloading were the segmentation of the stream of data and doing IP restrictions to try and prevent streaming of the file to an outside source, you see the IP restriction at work on alot of modern pirate video websites.
@dilong-paradoxus it does save bandwidth for a company to kill the buffering after a certain time ofc but when you go smaller then youtube one of the main threats is the people who try and use streaming sites as fileshare servers to things like Kodi and having users be fully disconnected from your advertisement revenue but still consuming bandwidth
@mumbeasjumbeas this is so real
Get shitty enough internet and you can make it a reality
Facts
And yet, the ads are running smoth in 4k without interuption
@tumblerislovetumblerislife ublock origin is available on mobile firefox
ppl that think this is about ads 😞
@tumblerislovetumblerislife how would that fix the buffer change?
Wait you can't do that anymore?
I did this in high school, I'd load up a bunch of vids at home to watch at school because we didn't have open wifi
When I used to set up a movie on stream hours prior just so it could buffer all the way lmao
@tribbleenchantress So basically they tried to stop downloads but did a shitty job and only really managed to inconvenience people with slow internet?
@loaexmachina @tumblerislovetumblerislife there's also YouTube ReVanced which is a patched version of the official YouTube app. You can select options for showing dislikes, skipping sponsor segments, and avoiding ads. I prefer it over NewPipe. If you have both, you can use ReVanced for everything but NewPipe to download videos from ReVanced with a built-in button
ReVanced actually has an option for custom buffering if you select that patch iirc
I should mention it's android only
@silvaruslupus me too!
Whaaaaaaaat this is not a thing anymore.......this explain it though...whaaaaaaaat
@bean-bean-bean-machine because videos have increased exponentially in file size and you dont want all that in your ram
@tumblerislovetumblerislife and I just use opera on mobile because I'm not watchin yt ads like literally they can fuck off with that
I didn’t even know it didn’t do this anymore
Fuck dash playback all my homies hate dash playback
@scenteddreamtheorist i have an iphone and have revanced
@mindonmymoneyandmoneyonmymind YOU GET IT can we marry
@cringepoop not the official revanced, you might have something that uses that name but revanced is only coded for android.
I would buffer multiple tabs before I got on a plane. good old days
I would load a video, then go to school and instead of using the replay button, i would just scroll back in the video and that way i could watch this video untill class started... Those were good times
I would pre-load streamed movies/shows for the crew to watch in the library during lunch. As long as the page didn't get refreshed, we were 👌
