“Dairy free!” May contain milk
“Made with almond butter!” Processed in a facility that process peanuts

ETA: “Plant based!” Contains traces of milk, eggs, and nuts

Every time lol

Once we went to an allergy-friendly restaurant (gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free) because my partner is allergic to avocado. It wasn’t clear on the website, but we saw that most of the dishes didn’t include avocado so it seemed like a good choice.

We didn’t know until we got there that they use avocado oil on literally everything…

It was fine, they were able to make something for her, but options were super limited and it was kind of a bummer because we went there specifically so she could have options.

At least they were super accommodating and understanding.

That's rough I'm sorry. Avocado is tricky - most oils are heat pressed (like peanut oil) and likelihood of reaction is low, but avocado oil is cold pressed so reactions are still very possible

“Allergen free” meaningless marketing. Should also definitely be banned as a term because there are many types of allergies, it’s too much of a bold claim

i always cringe a little when a package says "allergen free"- "top 9 allergen free" is fine, but just "allergen free"?? like the air we breath isnt even allergen free 😭

記憶が続く、物語が深まる

It only ever tends to assume Top 9 and like…a ton of allergies exist outside of those lol. It’s an ironic laugh every time I’ve been offered an “allergy friendly” cinnamon roll when my allergy is to cinnamon.

“Yes this soup is vegetarian!” The broth is made with chicken base

Having a rare, life-threatening food allergy is like playing a weird food-related video game on hard mode. Nothing is safe!

lol I love this, and it only gets harder as you accumulate more allergies or your fave food gets discontinued or w.e😭

At a burger place, I was asking the waitress if one of the sauces was ketchup/tomato based. Explained I was allergic to tomatoes and tomato products. She proudly offered to bring me their allergy friendly menu "that lists all our ingredients". It was the top 9 allergens lol. Thanks, ma'am, I appreciate it, but this is not helpful to me at all!

It’s even worse when it says “may contain”. Like excuse me, I’m not trying to play allergy roulette here. Had this happen to me once when I ate a burger bun that had no physical sesame seeds and it said “may contain”. Well, I was wrong about it being okay for me.

Sesame. Sesame is my worst enemy. It’s everywhere

My new favorite restaurant was open three months before they changed their gf pizza crust and pasta to ones containing potato starch (allergic to wheat and potato, among many other things). When they told me, my heart dropped and I so badly wanted to just get up and leave, but we were hungry. So I got my sad plate of plain salmon and steamed spinach and wanted to cry the whole time. (I hate steamed spinach, btw, and desperately wanted a salad or any other vegetable but they claimed they couldn't do anything else safely. Wtf?)

I was so happy when I found a place that had really yummy options for me. And then they ruined it. Obviously not going back.

My partner is allergic to soy, mustard, and rapeseed.

Rapeseed is a pain to avoid, and if it doesn't contain rapeseed, it contains soy in some capacity.

And we've learned that "may contain" means "definitely contains" because god forbid he takes a bite out of anything that "may contain" soy.

I also saw some cheese crisps that were a may contain for fish (my allergy - epipen level). FISH. In CHEESE CRISPS. I was in absolute disbelief, I said very loudly in the shop "who 'may contains' fish for CHEESE CRISPS"

As you can tell. I'm still in disbelief.

Try finding out that ice cream contains carrots. They use it as natural colouring.

Missing out on ice cream because of carrots feels like a cruel trick

Being allergic to dairy, egg, pn, tn, sesame, fish abs shellfish is not fun. Also not cool with the ingredient list is safe and then its warning of shared lines or facility.

Yeah, only one of mine is a ‘top 9’ (wheat) and the vast majority of gluten free substitutes contain one or more of my other allergens.

Nut free but contains coconut and I'm allergic to coconuts

I so feel this. Allergic to every legume. Wonderful, it doesn’t contain soy or peanuts….but it still has chickpea, peas, or lentils. 🙃

pea protein my behated

What gets me is the increase in use of food items in cosmetics and bath products, and because it's not consumed, there's an assumption that it won't cause a reaction. Also, because it's not consumed, the company is under no obligation to list ingredients in plain language, or at all, or to post the "may contain" warning.

I've had quite a number of reactions from lip balm and shampoo/conditioners.

This is my kid. Allergic to milk. Cool, I hear the best vegan cheese is cashew-based. Well, that can’t work. He’s allergic to cashews too. Let’s look at Nutella substitutes- may contain pistachios. Well crap. Allergic to pistachios, too. Let’s just see about bagels with tofu spread. Bagel has egg wash. Kid is also allergic to eggs. Glad we aren’t alone, but damn I wish scientists could figure these problems out!

As someone with a newly developed allium allergy I feel this deeply.

I discovered that Tasty Taters contained onions. At least Smiles are plain and safe.

“nut free facility!” but uses pea protein (unsafe for peanut allergies)

lol it’s too real. There was a place in my city that was big for the food allergy community there. It was gluten free so many things ended up with nuts instead. I could actually eat less of the menu there than probably 99% of restaurants

or the fucking ''dairy free'' and then it says ''may contain milk''. like is it dairy free or not???

The worst is when you ask at a restaurant if an item contains your allergen but staff aren't given an ingredient list, only a list of the top 9 allergens. Quinoa, for example, gets slipped silently into all sorts of foodstuffs, from protein powders to bread.
