Docs detail fatal Darien Lake accident

DARIEN, N.Y. (WIVB) - After a Freedom of Information request to the state Department of Labor, News 4 received documents surrounding the death of Sgt. James Hackemer at Darien Lake in July.

We received the inspection reports, detailing notices of violation and orders to comply, for 2009, 2010, and 2011. The documents are linked below:

News 4 also received the accident-injury report on Sgt. Hackemer's fatal fall from the Ride of Steel, along with accident-injury reports from 2008 and 2009. The report details the findings by the state on what took place that led up to Sgt. Hackemer being thrown from the coaster. Darien Lake was cited by the state Department of Labor for the accident, and afterwards, re-opened the ride.

The Ride of Steel is once again closed. 32 people were briefly stuck on the initial hill after a chain snapped, coiling at the base of the ride. Darien Lake says it will be re-opened once parts are delivered and repairs made.

Sgt. Hackemer was recently lain to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. George Richert was among around 150 people who traveled to Virginia to be with the family as they said their final goodbye.
