E.g. Who would vote for a man obviously suffering from advanced Alzheimer's? Someone who thinks that everyone else virtuous is doing so. Etc. There is no 'there' there. There is no fundamental rational reason for doing so, only an impression that most other people are doing so, and so it is the right thing to do if you want to belong to the group. I think most of this is subconscious animal behavior, so it is not like they "figured out" this strategy. Conformism and a desire to belong are greater in women, and now women overwhelmingly influence the male children in single-parent homes, and in female-teacher classrooms. And testosterone levels are down. So lots of people want to belong to SOMETHING even if the something has no heart -- even if there is nothing substantial to which the group opinions are anchored. Everyone's behavior is based on the behavior they perceive in everyone else. Such a collection is regenerative and unstable.
You need to drop the very bad habit of granting ANYONE behaving in socially destructive ways ANY benefit of doubt i.e. making excuses why you shouldn't aggressively condemn them and their behavior and make them pay a very high price.
That's the reason they do it... we are too fucking nice and let them get away with it.
