Hybrid Intelligence: What You’re Really Buying

A friend sent me a screenshot the other day: “This platform claims their latest flagship GPT API costs just a few bucks per million tokens — is that legit?”
One look gave me the answer. Sure, you’ll get some genuine flagship GPT calls — but not all of them. Not even close. Quick aside: a token is the basic unit large language models bill by. The official flagship API’s input price works out to roughly a dozen yuan per million tokens; when a reseller is 10× cheaper than that, the product has almost certainly been watered down.
There are already documented cases of exactly this — API resellers advertising a top-tier model, while only a small fraction of the requests actually reach the model they promised. The rest get quietly routed to cheaper or open-source models and blended into what streams back to you. What you see on your screen is one smooth reply after another; what you can’t tell is that one sentence came from the flagship, and the next from some small open-source model that bills pennies per million tokens.
