March 2014 Update:

House B News

Reminders:

• Memorials Field Trip: April 30th

• Science Night: Thursday, April 24 (6pm-8pm)

Science News (Pryde-Haskins & Sejour)

Seventh grade science has moved into learning about cell division, genetics, and DNA. Over the next few weeks students will work to solve problems on genetic diseases from the information they learned during in class notes, labs, and out of class research.   The science department has begun to prepare for our 4th annual Science Night here at Rocky Run. April 24th from 6:30-8:30pm we will host over 20 scientists here at the Rock. Students will have the opportunity to hear them speak about their exciting STEM careers and even earn some extra credit!

History News (Brown, Sawatzky & Rowland)

History students are learning about the Great Depression through “flipped lessons” at home followed by higher-order thinking in the classroom. Ask your child what advice he/she gave the President about overproduction, massive poverty, unequal distribution of wealth and unemployment. Your history student will be visiting FDR’s memorial and many other memorials and Arlington National Cemetery on our April 30th field trip. Our study of World War II begins just before Spring Break. This is the unit we spend the most time on in preparation for meeting actual veterans of the war and those who lived through it on June 6th. If you have someone you know that is over 80 years old that would like to share their memories of WWII, please have your child let their history teacher know! We need more guests for June 6th, WWII Oral History Day when the “Latest Generation Meets the Greatest Generation.” We are looking for both civilian eyewitnesses and veterans. Please help us to locate more people!

Some dates to keep in mind

  • Students will be meeting an Honor Flight on the Memorials Field Trip on April 30th.  We are hoping that this inspires students and their parents to attend the Honor Flight Movie which is being shown at Rocky Run on Friday, May 9th.    Information about the movie can be found at http://www.honorflightthemovie.com/
  • Students will have the opportunity to march in the National Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 26th.  Information about this event will be sent to students after Spring Break

English News (Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Wetzel)

Rocky Run students enjoyed a visit from Touching Spirit Bear author Ben Mikaelsen on March 26. We wrapped up our unit on persuasion and media literacy and are now focusing on our poetry unit, including a poetry café. We culminate with classroom Poetry Slams and then the school wide Poetry Slam on May 7th after school. Please see our individual Blackboard sites for details!
