Here Are Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant Winners for 2016

Last night was the Oscars, and today is the food Oscars for Asia: The continent’s 50 Best Restaurants were just announced in an awards ceremony in Bangkok. For the second year in a row, Bangkok’s own Gaggan — helmed by Indian-born chef Gaggan Anand — snagged the number-one spot. Tokyo’s Narisawa also retained its second place ranking; rounding out the top five is Singapore’s Restaurant André, which rose two spots from last year, followed by Hong Kong’s Amber and Nihonryori Ryugin in Tokyo.

Tokyo’s modern French restaurant Quintessence snagged the “Highest Climber Award,” ascending from number 49 last year to number 20 for 2016. Also making an impressive leap this year: The top-ranked restaurant in India, New Delhi’s Indian Accent, jumped from number 22 last year to grab the number nine slot. The “Highest New Entry Award” went to Mingles in Seoul, which made its 50 Best debut at number 15.

Other awards of note: The title for Asia’s Best Pastry Chef went to Cheryl Koh of Les Amis and Tarte in Singapore, and Ultraviolet’s Paul Pairet snagged the Chef’s Choice award, which is voted on by fellow 50 Best chefs.
