Many of these men are on vital, life saving medications that they NEED to take but they couldn't tell you how often they take those meds, what the pills look like, where they're kept in the house, or even the names of their prescriptions. Even when the wife is exhausted from working all night, even when she is so sick that she's barely functioning, even when she is clearly doing a million other things, she is still expected to handle her husband's medications.And I simply do not understand it. Learned helplessness and weaponized incompetence anger me in a lot of ways but this is just fucking stupid. How are you, a grown adult who is physically and mentally capable of doing this task, depending entirely on your partner to keeo you alive out of nothing but sheer refusal to learn? What will you do if she ends up hospitalized? If she ends up with a condition that results in her requiring more care than you do? If she leaves your ass for never doing housework and for yelling at her for not having your pills ready at 6 pm on the dot? If she dies? The answer many of these men give to these questions is that they'll figure it out, that they're not babies who need everything done for them, but if you can figure it out when she's no longer there to do it for you, why can't you figure it out now? Why can't you do this for yourself just to take a little bit of pressure off of her shoulders? Why are you putting your health entirely in her hands for nothing except your own convenience? (Obligatory disclaimer that this is not an inherently gendered issue and this applies to anyone who engages in this behavior, but it is a societal problem where men are often expected and even encouraged in many ways to depend on their wives to handle things like this and not do it themselves.)12486
