fucks me up that by total coincidence the sun and moon's size difference is exactly matched to their difference in distance from us, thus making our beautiful total solar eclipses where you can see the silver threads of the sun's corona possible because the moon just covers the sun completely
The stars (literally) aligned just right for this experience to be possible. It's likely that aliens don't have this
The moon is also absolutely gargantuan by moon standards. It isn't the largest moon in the solar system, but it is BY FAR the largest in comparison with its planet. Ganymede is the largest satellite of Jupiter and the largest moon in the solar system. Its diameter is only about 3.8% of Jupiter's. Titan's radius is 4.4% of Saturn's. Callisto and Io are the next largest in the neighborhood, with 3.4% and 2.6% the diameter of Jupiter respectively.
Our moon is number 5. It is smaller in direct comparison to the above moons. The diameter of the moon is 3475 km. That is a full 27% of the diameter of the Earth. More than a quarter. That's ridiculous. It's unheard of. The universe is large enough that the word unique probably doesn't mean a lot, but this might be about as close as you get.
This has had a huge impact on our planet. Other things aliens might not have are significant tides. One of Mars's dumpy little potatoes wouldn't be able to move oceans the way our moon does.
Our moon has also stabilized our axis to a massive degree. Without her up there our axis would wobble all over the place and our climate would be far more chaotic. Aliens might not be quite so lucky.
I guess what I am really trying to say is that the moon is extremely cool. I like the moon.
Just want to add that the reason we have such a large moon is because a whole planet crashed into proto-Earth. Theia (the planet) and Earth got so superheated by this collision that their component cores fused and the impact jettisoned a lot of material into space. That massive amount of jettisoned material became our moon. So Earth and the moon have very similar composition. This does not seem to be a common method of lunar formation.
what if the answer to the fermi paradox is that life cant exist without a moon like luna
I got a serious beef with the Fermi paradox. There is no Fermi paradox. There stopped being a Fermi paradox once the first radio telescopes went up, and we began to get a true sense of the sheer scale of the universe.
Space is big, empty, and loud. Sunspots can cause enough interference to affect global communications. We’re not even loud enough to talk over our own sun. On our own planet. We can barely communicate with Voyager, and we know exactly where it is and what its signal sounds like.
The Fermi paradox is like doubting the existence of Belfast, because you stood on a windy New York beach shouting towards it and didn’t get an answer.
i didn't realise we were drowned out by our own sun :(

dominopandaRebloggeddct239394cvvd098dffgggpto this day i cannot BELIEVE aang called up and blew off like nine avatars just because they didnt offer any vegan options to ending the war pikameme-dayoroku: my best friend assaulted me as a senior citizen :(kyoshi: sometimes some murder is OKkuruk: just punch people that disagree with youaang: okay i’m starting to think that none of you took this avatar thing seriouslyteeveewYou're not wrongaboutirohAang when he is told he’s the Avatar at age 12: *has a melt down because he understands the seriousness of this function and the consequences his new responsibilities will have on his personal life* other Avatars at age 16: I’m the avatar? Cool! Hey look it comes with a glowing eyes feature! aviculoraang: fuck this noise, i’ll get advice from the last air nomad avataryangchen: i gave up that hippie bullshit first chance i got, i love murderhedge-ramblesI will never not laugh at the bit where Aang is like "finally, an Air Nomad, you get me, right?" and Yangchen just says "sorry bud, I also vote murder".A close second on that note is of course the trial of Kyoshi in which she manifests in the courtroom just to say "Actually, I did murder him and I'd do it again. But consider: the bitch had it coming". kittyissac#tbh I think there's something to be said for the fact that Aang was 12 when he ran away from home#and how there's more than a bit of evidence that the adult airbenders had a less strict pacifistic approach#Aang was purposefully sheltered by Gyatsu to protect his childhood and so he has the ethics of a child#and when he awoke there were no other air nomads around to sit him down and have The Violence Talk#about how yes we're pacifists and murder is bad but there are exceptions#like Gyatsu was a kindly man of the highest order but uh#he didn't just lay down and die on a pile of skulls he just found#man went out taking like 20 fire nation soldiers with him#Aang: ''I could never kill! Gyatsu taught me to abhor all forms of violence“”#Gyatsu: deals out death to attacking soldiers like he's got a side hustle as a claymore minezarohkAnd the fact that he figures out a more technically complex and socially stable way to remove Ozai without making him a martyr just shows that he has a lot more skill at the problem at hand than most the previous ones.To me, that whole scene was very much the previous avatars saying “when all you have is a hammer” and Aang going “okay, but what can I do with this Swiss Army knife?” and they don’t give very useful advice about it.dominopandaWhat all this people are talking about?????
1. Aang is no podigy (airbending prodigy maybe), his spirit givng Korra powers back is litteraly Deus ex Machina as well as the lion turtle giving Aang spirit bending. Also Aang was told he's avatar at 12 instead of 16 because there was a war ahead and not because he's cooler then other avatars.
2. Aang ran away because nomad leaders were going to separate him from Gyatsu, the last person in his corner who pushed back against sacrificing Aangs life for the sake of the world. And it was impulsive and stupid move but that's ok because Aang is a CHILD. He was just a kid back then and he's still a kid in the series. He only fully embraces his Avatar duty by book 3 maybe and that's ok, that's good writing of a character growth.
3. The moral dilemma of killing Ozai is a complicated topic that writers could not fully expand on due to show's rating. The point of it, I think, is not that Aang found a better solution or that all other avatars are wrong (although they're shown to have flaws). It was to show the meaning of great responsibility that Avatar has. When your decisions literally affect the whole world you can't be selfish or biased about them. Roku spared Sozin because of their friendship, inadvertently leading to all this mess, and that's his biggest regret. Yangchen chastises Aang for holding air nomads pacifistic belives above all else because it's selfish. The lion turtle scene happens only after the fight comes to end to convince us that this is it, Aang has to acsept that saving the world is more important then saving your soul, and in some way he does, because energy bending is shown to be very dangerous. The scene where Aang's blue light is slowly cosumed by Ozai's orange is so epic! I wish they made energy bending look like this in Korra but whatever.TLDR: Go watch the entire show again and listed what it tells you this time!#reblog#rant#the op is right about vegan option#as well as hedge-rambles#this scene is so funny598,013101,086

Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn. Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.📺Here is my list:Proko (Free, mostly teaches anatomy and how to draw people. But does have art talks and teaches the basics.)Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard and teaches you everything)Aaron Rutten (free, tips about art, talks about art programs and the best products for digital art)BoroCG (free, teaches a verity of art mediums from 3D modeling to digital painting. As well as some tips that can be used across styles)Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)Jesus Conde (free, teaches digital painting and has classes in Spanish)Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price. Mostly teaching character designs and simple backgrounds.)SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney. Mostly nature art)Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)Sinix Design (has some tips on drawing people)Winged canvas (art school for free on a verity of mediums)Bob Ross (just a good time, learn how to paint, as well as how too relax when doing art. "there are no mistakes only happy accidents", this channel also provides tips from another artist)Scott Christian Sava (Inspiration and provides tips and advice)Pikat (art advice and critiques)Drawbox (a suggested cheap online art school, made of a community of artist)Skillshare (A cheap learning site that has art classes ranging from traditional to digital. As well as Animation and tutorials on art programs. All under one price, in the USA it's around $34 a month)Human anatomy for artist (not a video or teacher but the site is full of awesome refs to practice and get better at anatomy)Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.📚Here is my list:The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information."Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting."Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy. "Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy. "Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics."Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures."Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way."Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects."An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive. For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )Procreate ( pay once for $9.99 usd, IPAD & IPHONE ONLY)Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, animation and more. Free)PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)Krita (Free)mypaint (free)FireAlpaca (free)Aseprite ($19.99 usd but has a free trail, for pixel art Windows & macOS)Drawpile (free and for if you want to draw with others)IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)Medibang (free, IPAD, Android and PC)NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible. So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.Hope this was helpful and have a great day."also apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I have Dyslexia and it makes my brain go XP when it comes to speech or writing" 50571,06474,089

dominopandaReblogged nyrhtak04newwavepizzagirlFollowmy biggest issue with the httyd live action-and just about any live action reboot is that it seems that the live action adaptations are being made to make the original “better”? like, so many people talk about a live action spiderverse, a live action hercules, a live action PRINCE OF EGYPT (dont piss me OFF.)-like animation is a beautiful work of art, and for some reason putting real people and cgi in it is supposed to be an “upgrade”? im probably being that friend that’s too woke or whatever, but i just think it’s so disrespectful to act like something that takes so much time and effort and energy is immediately considered as lower because it is animated. animation is beautiful, and it is one of the most heartfelt art forms there are, and erasing that for the sake of a cash grab is downright degrading to animation as a medium. transitranger327Hot take: live-action movies need animated remakesspacefinchYES.jedipiratekingSTAR WARS All the movies. All of them. Use the same audio just animate everything.dominopandaIt's more then disrespect it's complete disregard! for the very same bibliography of animated masterpieces that made Disney, Dreamworcs etc. into legends they're now! No sympathy, no quarter, and no mercytitenouteLearn your history, and don’t let it repeat YET again.kolvarit is already repeating. What was not mentioned is, that Nazism is inherently friendly to the wealthy and the “elites”, and those elites (at least those, that are of the right “race”) profit from it.politicalantibodySomeone does not have to wear a swastika, or honor Hitler, to be a Nazi.can-i-make-image-descriptions[Image IDs: Tweets from (((Yonatan Zunger))) (@/ yonatanZunger) on 10/22/17 reading: People seem to think “Nazi” is meant as a slur or term of abuse. It’s not: it has a straightforward, literal meaning. After WWII, there was a campaign to argue that Nazism had no real ideology, that it was just some group of people, to delegitimize it. That had some value, but is downside was that people forgot that Nazism *does* have an ideology, and it never went away. Nazism conceives of the world as a struggle between races. That’s not “race” in the 20c US “black/white” sense; Jews, Slavs, Britons, and so on are all “races,” too. And Nazis believed that races have certain characteristics, which are passed on through the blood: and that they are bound to some land. There are a few other articles of Nazi belief: for example, that acting (“the will”) is better than thinking (a sign of weaker races). And that the strength of a race is most strongly exemplified through the untrammeled Will of its leaders. (If you’re thinking, “Wait, you just made an ideology around obeying people who don’t think?” you may have spotted one of the problems.) The “National Socialism” is a very real thing, too. It’s socialism *for members of the nation.* And they decide who’s in and who’s out. Government subsidies for “good, decent people?” Sure. Just don’t give it to those parasites. So here’s the important thing: These ideas make up Nazism. You don’t need to wear a swastika to believe in them. And here’s the other important thing: If you’re in the US, you may have grown up hearing “Nazis are the bad guys” without learning *why.* Or you may have learned about concentration camps, but not about what happened in the ten years leading up to them. When the Nazis came to power in Germany, they didn’t build camps. they passed laws restricting jobs for “non-German” races (nations). They argued that money spent on the disabled was simply a drain on society and we should move them to hospitals. They held angry public rallies which often included violence. Their leaders and militias flaunted the law, because they knew it didn’t apply. They saw who they could kill and get away with, and gradually, over time, expanded that. They encouraged “voluntary self-deportation” of unwanted Jews, by banning them from holding jobs. When no country wanted a few million refugees, it was their proof that nobody wanted the Jews. So camps were started up as administrative holding centers, where they could be put to good use - that is, as slave labor. The disabled, moved to remote hospitals, were out of sight out of mind: so that’s where they did their first experiments of mass murder. I could go on about this for hours, but the point is: this was a story of an ideology which did exactly what it said on the label. Not by showing up one night and starting to kill people, but slowly, gradually, building up public normalization of what they did. When I refer to Nazis in the US, I am not using this as some kind of generic slur against people I disagree with. Nazis are people who subscribe to the ideology of Nazism, plain and simple, whatever organizations they do or don’t affiliate with. Nazism is an ideology fundamentally inimical to everyone who isn’t a Nazi. It is a known and proven threat to life. “Punching Nazis” is a way to signal to them that their ideology is not welcome in the public sphere, to keep them quiet and afraid. If Nazis are extremely few in number, and very reluctant to speak, then their public speech becomes an opportunity for the public… to rally against them, to reiterate its refusal to allow this. This is where the old ACLU “speech for Nazis” argument came from. If they are somewhat bigger in number, they become a part of public discourse - thus legitimating questions like “well, *are* [X] people?” To legitimate these questions is to require every such group to continuously prove their humanity, an their right to even argue back. This is not a real counterspeech remedy. Normalizing the question of “is [X] human?” places the burden on them to continuously prove it. This is why Nazi speech is a public danger when they are in anything but the smallest numbers. What are their numbers? cf this Reuters/lpsos poll from a few weeks ago: centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/wp… 14% of people (N=5,360) were neutral to positive on Nazis *when referred to by that name*. Support for their ideals was much higher. Punching Nazis is a minor control mechanism: it silences the danger without amplifying its speech. But it doesn’t solve anything. Historically, there has been exactly one solution for Nazis. It did not come cheap. Never forget what Nazism is - and that when it appears, it needs to be stopped immediately and vigorously. “Nazi” is not a slur, and it should not be used for anyone who does not advocate those ideas. But it should be used for those who do. And for those: no peace, no sympathy, no quarter, and no mercy. // /End IDs]69,31064,737
