The Punisher showrunner talks Frank Castleโ€™s nemesis Jigsaw and possible second season

November 21, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Steve Lightfoot, showrunner for The Punisher, has spoken about telling an origin story for the showโ€™s villain.

The Punisher has well and truly arrived on Netflix, being as gruesome and brutal as one might expect. Aside from telling Frankโ€™s tale of revenge against those that murdered his family, the show also acts as an origin story for Billy Russo, a.k.a. Jigsaw.

Jigsaw is Frankโ€™s arch-nemesis, and Lightfoot has spoken to The Hollywood Reporter about the decisions made:

โ€œWe just wanted a great character in season one, first and foremost, who was a foil for Frank, and not some guy who is being evil for the sake of it,โ€ said Lightfoot. โ€œI think all of the best shows are where the villains think theyโ€™re the good guy. They donโ€™t get up every day and go, โ€˜Iโ€™m going to be evil today!โ€™โ€

โ€œBilly, in a way, is a guy who made one bad choice,โ€ Lightfood said. โ€œHe pursued the money, and now heโ€™s having to deal with all of the repercussions of that, which sets him at odds with probably the only great friend he has ever had. Thereโ€™s a sadness to that story.โ€

The show spends the whole season developing Billyโ€™s character and his journey to becoming Jigsaw, and, as Lightfoot mentions, the pay off will be even bigger for future seasons:

โ€œOnce you decide to tell that story, you say, hey, we may as well make it Billy Russo and go on a journey where we build up this great character from the canon and the mythology, and leave ourselves in a position to go further with him next time, if we choose to.โ€

Meanwhile, Lightfoot also commented on the possibility of a second season, stating that: โ€œI genuinely donโ€™t know how the Netflix system works with making those calls, and I assume once they do [make a call] theyโ€™ll tell Marvel and Marvel will tell me and weโ€™ll jump back to it. But Iโ€™m very excited to do so. I think we left both Frank and Billy in places where there are so many ways to jump off from if that second season comes. We can do anything with them, in truth.โ€

After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New Yorkโ€™s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone.

The Punisher features a cast that includes Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Ben Barnes (Billy Russo), Jason R Moore (Curtis Hoyle), Michael Nathanson (Sam Stein), Daniel Webber (Lewis Walcott), Amber Rose Revah (Dinah Madani), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Micro), Jaime Ray Newman (Sarah Lieberman), Paul Schulze (Bill Rawlins), Clancy Brown (Ray Shoonover), Geoffrey Cantor (Mitchell Ellison), C. Thomas Howell (Carson Wolf), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Farah Madani) and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Marion James).
