It wasn't supposed to be a movie. The second series had already been started when Sega had its economic collapse. Sega money stopped and the rest of the production committee cobbled the movie together from animation completed from the first six episodes.
It was such a shame. People were stealing the movie posters with the teenage Ruri. And then when the product actually delivered, and left more questions than answers. It sort of unraveled.

Ruri is still really popular and recently even got a new figure, it's surprising that there was never any real attempt to properly finish the series. Nadesico is one of my favorite anime and I was so butthurt about the movie after I watched it, I was angry for like 6 months.

I can also vouch for Helck (both anime and manga) being very good. The animation is looks pretty cheap, but that's the economy for you. Otherwise the adaptation was solid.

It was supposed to be spiritual successor to Nadesico and there were big plans for three seasons and entire franchise around it, but apparently producers and Sato had some internal beef and entire project was scrapped, with I think in 2010 Sato confirming that there's no chance for it to ever comeback.
The first season was great and there was promise for more. Sadly shit never delivered and Stellvia quickly became forgotten.
With Xebec and Sato gone, the chances for revival are less than zero. It's over...

I remember when my enthusiasm for anime was waning and I thought I'd give up on it and find another hobby. I decided my last series would be Martian Successor Nadesico.

It reignited my love of the genre because it just hit every note so well. The one Evangelion parody/rip off that understood the assignment and made something really engaging and even original out of it.

So thanks, Sato, you got me back on the hook.
