Try this simple thought experiment to gauge how much your manager is invested in you. If you walked into their office tomorrow and told them you were leaving, what would happen?

If you are a C player, your manager would be relieved. You were a problem they no longer have to deal with.

If you are a B player, it would be annoying. They’d have to redistribute your work and start planning for your replacement. Inconvenient, but they’d get over it in a week.

But if you are an A player, your manager would feel it in their gut. Losing you would leave a real hole. So they would fight to keep you.

Most people don’t think about the strength of their relationship with their manager. But that relationship is crucial. It is key to how they view you (A, B, or C) and, thus, how invested they are in you.
