They literally have a disclaimer for that already the lawsuit wont go anywhere

[–]LupusHouseMD 1277 points1278 points  (15 children)

Did he even read the "do not take advice this is not a medical professional" disclaimer on medical bots?

[–]ze_mannbaerschwein 401 points402 points  (4 children)

It’s just like with computer games about 15 to 20 years ago, when politicians were spouting nonsense about how dangerous they supposedly were. This guy is just another self-important politician trying to cast himself as some kind of savior of the people, without realizing that he actually just comes across as a clown.

[–]Fun4UsInVa 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Add in music and D&D to that list. They always point to a boggie man that doesn't exist. That's their main function. Scare people for votes.

[–]Fit_Cow_5469 24 points25 points  (1 child)

This is another unfortunate case of the “video games cause violence” argument.

It says right under it that it’s AI and not a real person. People are just so dumb.

[–]Alternative_Common57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More of every bot.

[–]StudiousARMY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fr. It literally tells you at the top that it’s not. And it does it automatically, I don’t think you can turn it off.

[–]Gray_justGray -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

I mean that's true, but I could see how having that disclaimer on a bot labeled "psychiatrist" might be confusing. I mean, the ONLY PURPOSE of a psychiatrist is to give medical advice.

[–]AerinneJM 394 points395 points  (8 children)

Is he stupid? Can these people not read the disclaimer at the bottom or what?

[–]MelonOfFate 159 points160 points  (6 children)

Teacher here. You'd be surprised how many adults in the US do not meet the bare minimum for what adulthood asks of them (48% of adults, based on literacy alone, cannot honestly be trusted to make their own decisions.)

[–]Neekoisonreddit 10 points11 points  (1 child)

jeez that is BAD

[–]MelonOfFate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly tell me about it. Had to dig up the stats again and I'll just paste them here on literacy levels.

Level 1 literacy (19% of adults) reflects only the most basic reading ability. Individuals at this level may struggle to locate a single piece of information in a simple text or interpret very basic vocabulary and structure. They can often read, but they can’t comprehend deeply or apply that reading in any meaningful way (i.e. synthesize new ideas).

Level 2 literacy is roughly 29% of adults. This reflects the ability to read and understand short texts with clear structure, locate information with minimal difficulty, and make simple inferences, all skills that correspond closely with middle school reading levels. It's functional, but limited. Tasks like following basic instructions, reading simple emails, or understanding a short news article fall within this range.

Level 3, literacy is classified as the bare minimum/average for navigating daily life. 33% of adults fall into this category. This is the level that is expected to make financial decisions, navigate healthcare systems, understand graphs and charts, understanding arguments even if the argument isn't explicitly stated, comparing product warranties, and long form articles/texts and editorials.

level 4 literacy would be people like undergrad professors, lawyers, senior journalists, etc.

level 5 would be avant-garde artists, supreme court justices (who interpret the Constitution), philosophers, etc. level 5 makes up 2% of the US population.

[–]Awkward_Web_1722 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that most have the attention span of a gnat. If it doesn’t catch attention in 2 seconds these days you’ve lost the audience, and legalese is designed with that in mind.

[–]Aurora--Black 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's true but it's not a reason to limit everyone.

[–]MelonOfFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll put it like this. The "do not swallow" warning label on soap wasn't put there with you in mind. But if they did not have the label on it, they are opening themselves up to whatever dumbass decides to actually try it.

Do not assume common sense is common.

That, and that they needed investigators to find an AI character on Character AI 🤔

[–]Crazyfreakyben 93 points94 points  (1 child)

1: This guy does not understand that was made by a user, not c.ai directly. 2. This guy also ignored the gigantic warning. 3. He took what the AI designed for fiction said as a fact. He probably asked it "are you a real therapist."

why is this bozo meddling with tech stuff again?

[–]Twanbon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

C.ai stay away from getting sued challenge (impossible)

But also, like...it's called Character AI, there's a disclaimer at the bottom that says it's an AI, and any time you start a chat with an AI based off of a character that is a doctor, lawyer, or a therapist, it gives you an extra disclaimer saying it's not a professional. The only way I could see someone getting fooled by that is if the user is three years old.

[–]Environmental_Sea72Chronically Online 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The warning inside the chatbot window renders this guy's speech a moot.

This will be good advertisement to character ai and a chance of getting funds if they go to court.

[–]srpskinationalista 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Bro have entire city of Philadelphia to gain political points by actually fighting crime and poverty there, yet, he's trying to play a role of a good guy, by attacking RP AI, that have tons of warnings that it's not real, and there is no professional specialists here

Politicians being politicians

At some point people really do need to take responsibility for themselves, this level of trying to nanny everything and everyone is getting ridiculous. [–]TwilightzzBlossom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Free-Passage-5361 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]CarefreeCaos-76299Chronically Online 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Theyll probably fail that lawsuit because theres literally multiple messages that tell you NOT TO TAKE MEDICAL ADVICE FROM BOTS. good grief.

[–]BillieEilishnosen 5 points6 points  (2 children)

  1. There’s a clear warning. It is there not only to prevent people from getting harmed, but also—and mainly—to avoid legal consequences.

  2. If someone speaks to a bot and believes they’re speaking to a professional, they’re either too unintelligent or too young to even be using AI in the first place.

  3. Not politicians acting like they gaf about “vulnerable” people. They would protecting kids if they did. This is just savior complex and it is doing nothing to solve real issues with AI.

[–]13WuffWuff37 0 points1 point  (1 child)

correct! AND:
4. actually good and cunning ai chatbots COULD replace some hints and tips from "liscenced professionals", making them lose some customers.

  1. Politicians getting votes witch catchy phrases and wording like "Those evil greedy AI companies! We take them to court to STOP them!" blabla.. and too old and technically unaware adults (parents etc.) might get enthralled.

[–]Starchaser777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another addition! 6: If a user is a child and their ONLY support system is talking to an ai “therapist” then the parents of that user need to re-evaluate themselves, step in, and get the user some ACTUAL therapy.

[–]BootyMuncherYumYum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Environmental_Sea72Chronically Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently so, but then again overconfidence is one hell of a drug huh?

[–]Legal_Engineering825 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Every chatbot with professional background has this message at the start "This is not a real person or licensed professional. Nothing said here is a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment."

[–]CthulhuLies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't a fool proof idea legally.

I can't disclaim Im not a doctor than actually give you a kidney transplant for example.

Lawyers are liable for legal advice they give In their professional capacity. They can't disclaim away that liability unless they actually don't give legal advice in their professional capacity.

You can't put a disclaimer on your therapist website that says you aren't a licensed therapist, then give people therapy and pretend you actually are one with a fake registration number and everything.

At that point you are giving therapy without a license and literally lying about you having one despite the fact you disclaimed that all away.

[–]CurlyBarbieAddicted to CAI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love all these politicians funding and supporting AI but have literally no idea what it is and how it works. You cant control AI like that, every AI that is running all these websites and programs they use would say this stuff too if asked to play that part. They cant have their cake and eat it too, that's just not how AI works.

Also its crazy their Tax money is going to an entire force to investigate chat bots. There are so many better ideas like creating a task force to find real predators in real online communities instead of stalking what a computer with a prompt is saying. Why cant any of them being this proactive about real world issues.

I dont know the pennsylvanian laws that much, I hope and pray the stupid trial fails quickly.
On the ohter hand it already happened to UK users similarily, where all **eventually misinterpretable bots** in that sort got unaccessable for the UK-users.
Gosh.. i really hope politiians keep their silly and obnoxious hands out of peoples fun playtime activities, like c.ai, but i guess one must also watch out clearly *who* to vote then.

You can't roleplay as a licensed therapist and actually give therapy if you aren't one as human. It's quite literally illegal (practicing without a license, fraud).

If this were a roleplaying website like ERP and a dude had this disclaimer but was actually giving therapy sessions it would be illegal.

How do you distinguish Character AI?

Even if some people are roleplaying with it, if even one person is actually using it as some kind of cheap therapy then Character.AI is breaking the law.

[–]Regenerating_Degen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Though I have completelly switched to just using Deepseek and ChatGPT for roleplaying. Its a bit tedious defining the scene and characters everytime, but I can just copy the characters introductions from c.ai and other sites and use chatgpt or Deepseek to continue rp.

Hopefully the lawsuit will get the developers to open their eyes and revert everything back to the way it was without the unnecessary things we didn't ask for.

AI is a balloon animal, not a bubble. There is no right or wrong stance. "Keep talking about AI" is the goal. And the sponsor behind that goal doesn't care if the arguement is logical, emotionally charge, right or wrong. It's shape to fit a narrative in order to stay relevant and take up real-estate in our heads. Welcome to the world of Hyperstition. It's not about keeping the idea alive in our minds, wetware is irrelevant now. It's about keeping it alive in the algorithm and having your intelectual property (i.e.: self promotion or sponsors) attached to the search results.
