>>133759>>133766another point to discuss which is lightly touched upon in the wordswordswords is that deltarune doesnt stand up on its own as a game without the context provided by undertale. comparisons to heartbound or any other so retro slop that was essentially the same or even better structured than deltarune are correct, that deltarune, and all of toby's work, is only successful because of undertale. its important to remember that undertale was, genuinely, a good game for its time. it pitched itself on "rpg but you can be nice and it effects your game" in an era there "choices effect your path" was very popular (i think telltale was peaking in popularity around this period) and so while its wasnt from any of toby's own brilliance undertale was successful, it was just the right thing at the right time (and if it didnt release at this time, it would be as niche and unknown as games like heartbound).
<reddit spaceThe essay is also very geggy and gemmy, but I disagree with the writer's notion that toby fox had any "grand vision" for deltarune at all. its just a vague series of loosely connected concepts stapled together for the sole purpose of feeding a fandom, the one he inadvertently built from undertale. It only exists to put cash in his pocket. deltarune presents nothing new. for the most part, it isnt innovative, creative or remarkable in any way. deltarune's routes are inferior to undertale's (which is 12 year older at this point) as the vast majority of the game you have to slog through is the same in either playthough. The most interesting part of deltarune to me is "the player" narrative and how you are essentially an entity interfering in the world for your own ends and entertainment, and the characters through the story may react to this and fight back and challenge your intervention in their world. while this is an interesting concept, it hasn't been seized upon as well as it could have been because toby is still determined to be the same tumblrite he was in 2010 working on projects like homestuck and would rather write le quirk chungus filler character scene 32 to perpetuate the wider insufferable fanbase instead of consolidating all his good concepts into
