Etymology
[edit]From Old East Slavic въ мѣстѣ (vŭ městě), made of Old East Slavic въ (vŭ, “in”) and Old East Slavic мѣсто (město, “a place”); ultimately from Proto-Slavic *vъměstě (“along with”). Alternatively, from Old East Slavic въ мѣстѣхъ (vŭ městěxŭ).
Analyzable as a univerbation of в (v) + ме́сте (méste), prepositional singular of ме́сто (mésto).
