Etymology

[edit]

From Old East Slavic въ мѣстѣ (vŭ městě), made of Old East Slavic въ (, in) and Old East Slavic мѣсто (město, a place); ultimately from Proto-Slavic *vъměstě (along with). Alternatively, from Old East Slavic въ мѣстѣхъ (vŭ městěxŭ).

Analyzable as a univerbation of в (v) +‎ ме́сте (méste), prepositional singular of ме́сто (mésto).
