Attach rockets to the Earth to propel it away from the sun.

Not so far away that we all freeze to death; just far enough away to prevent global warming.

Make the exhaust ports for the rockets so long that they stretch out into space, to prevent the exhaust from getting caught in the atmosphere.

It would be better to just convert the earth to a Dyson Sphere. No, not the overpriced crappy vacuum...

That is a crazy idea.

Solar shades would be easier and cheaper. Also within our current technology. For moving a planet with an atmosphere you wouldn't actually have a ground based rocket. You'd use a fusion torch that points both down toward the planet, and away from it. The thrust down hits the atmosphere and pushes down as well as lifting up the torch. The push away from the planet is used to slowly move the planet. Downside is it massively heats the atmosphere. To move it in any reasonable amount of time(thousands of years) you would sterilize the planet.    I highly recommend listening to issac Arthur's podcast science and futurism with issac Arthur. He describes a lot of possible mega structures, planetary engineering, and stellar engineering.

I forgot, you can also slowly move a satellite (in this case our moon) and the planet will slowly follow the new trajectory. I don't remember the timeliness on this one but you can have ground based thrusters and you won't cook the planet.

And this way you don’t need traditional rockets, just solar powered rail guns firing moon rocks into space.

Like Bender did once?

Won't that make the year longer? By maybe a week or so? In that case I hereby declare it Robot Party Week!

I'll give you the upvote for your totally crazy idea.

I feel like a series of giant rail guns continuously launching mass would be more effective.

why can't we just mine a comet, and dump an iceberg in the ocean once a year?

Just let me build my 1000 car train to ride around the world when we get those calculations wrong.

They did it on Futurama.
