Red Star OS is a Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Linux distribution developed as a state-sanctioned replacement for Microsoft Windows. It is designed to operate under strict government oversight, incorporating mechanisms for monitoring and control. The operating system includes functionality that records user activity and transmits data to DPRK authorities. In addition, it features automatic watermarking of media files stored on the system using a unique serial identifier, enabling the tracing of content distribution. The system is heavily restricted by design. Access to several core Linux components is blocked, even when operating with root privileges. Attempts to disable these restrictions often result in error messages or forced system reboots. Versions 1 and 2 are based on Red Hat Linux, while version 3 is based on Fedora 11. The third version also introduces a redesigned user interface inspired by macOS.
