Makes sense to me. The good guys almost always win, no blood is shown when shot or bunched, the main characters are shown attending church or at least showing respect for the sanctity of the church, most episodes are either morality stories or just dumb adventure. And more examples that I can't think of off the top of my head that proves that westerns are the perfect media for the impressionable youths of Ireland.

What happened?

[–]Cloite[S] 37 points38 points  (18 children)

Uh, just the casual reinforcement of the physical force tradition into an entire generation of young, impressionable kids.

Irish lads playing cowboys and Indians not realizing they had more in common with the indians

The Kneecap movie makes this point, though it’s not the first to.

The most offensive part is that Ireland is supposed to have diplomatic relations with Choctaw people.

Not to mention the whole Baluba thing.

I think Ireland is doing alright, all things considered.

Also there's a Kneecap movie?

They are. They really are. Their stains aren’t as bad as the rest of the world, but I think they should be acknowledged.

Tá ann, a chara. Tá sé go maith.

I need to learn Irish one of these days.

[–]Cloite[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh I’m trying. It’s a lot of work.

Go download/buy O’Siadhail’s book, and have a look at things. Annas-archive.pk should be a live domain at the minute.

Thanks brother

Check out the Copula thing on Anki Web. There’s a Discord, Craic le Gaeilge, that uses it.

And there’s the Collins Easy Learning, there’s YouTube for pronunciation, and there’s a book called Búntus Cainte. That should have you set.

Go n-éirí leat!

Related, some of the biggest aid for The Irish Potato famine came from Native Americans

The world today if we didn't teach kids that physical force exists:

[–]Cloite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah but you get a potent combination when you combine a deeply rooted tradition of martyrdom and physical force with an opportunity for action.

[–]bowlbettertalk 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Careful now.

Down with this sort of thing!

(For those who don’t know, this is from the most famous Irish sitcom in the history of sitcoms. Very anti-Church - it pretty much sealed people’s disillusionment with the Church after decades of censorship. Father Ted)

[–]bowlbettertalk 4 points5 points  (1 child)

(Judging by the downvotes, no one here has heard of it.)

[–]Cloite[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s ok. I made that mistake once, being the seppo that I am.

I lit into someone for sectarianism after posting a meme featuring a priest with the text, “Protestants, up to no good as usual.”

It’s ok. They were very polite, considering everything, and I binged all of Father Ted shortly after that.

When I was growing up in the US my government wanted to indoctrinate me with enough patriotism, so I saw a lot of anti-Nazi content and now I hate my fascist government.

Is this why there's folks waving confederate flags up there?
Call me a plastic paddy, I'd rather be that than a plastic confederate.

[–]SubparSavant 11 points12 points  (3 children)

That's just Cork people. Cunts do be flying the North Korean flag too. Simpletons love the colour red and don't have the capacity to consider it any more deeply.

I've got cousins in Cork, maybe it's time for my chicken fried ass to pay a visit to the land of my ancestors.

[–]Cloite[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ah you should. Don’t sleep on Kerry and Galway though. Just make sure you say slawncha a bunch and you’ll be grand.

It's on the bucket list for sure

[–]Nerdenator 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's understandable that you wouldn't want to show kids bri*ish media.

You have them watch an episode of Only Fools and Horses or Monty Python, and pretty soon they're moaning about the weather, obsessing over how to properly stand in a line (while calling it a 'queue' unironically), and aspiring to a life of a pub darts tournament champion from Cheshire.

[–]Quiet_Comparison_872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't want kids watching anything connect to Jimmy 'the pedophile' Saville.

Now the troubles make a lot more sense
