A person is dead following a self-harm incident in a public park in Wairarapa at the weekend.

Witnesses reported a police presence at Masterton’s war memorial on Sunday and police told the Wairarapa Times-Age at the time there had been a case of self-harm at the location.

On Tuesday police confirmed that a person had since died and the case would be referred to the Coroner.

The Cenotaph was cordoned off on Sunday as police carried out their investigations but was open to the public on Monday.

The Wairarapa Soldiers’ Memorial is located near the southwest entrance to Queen Elizabeth Park and was the scene of early morning Anzac commemorations on Saturday. It remained surrounded by memorial wreaths.

A spokesperson for Masterton RSA said they were sad to hear that a person had died as a result of the incident at a place of remembrance for fallen soldiers.
